What Is the Most Secure Laptop? A Practical Guide to Choosing One

The most secure laptop depends on your threat model and configuration. Learn how to compare Windows Secured-core PCs with Apple silicon Macs and verify key protections.

There is no single most secure laptop for everyone. The right choice depends on what you need to protect, the exact device configuration, and whether you keep its security features enabled and up to date. For Windows buyers handling sensitive information, a Windows 11 Secured-core PC is a useful category to investigate. For Mac buyers, Apple documents hardware-backed protections on Apple silicon Macs, including the Secure Enclave and FileVault. Neither platform label is a guarantee of invulnerability or a substitute for checking the specific device.

What makes a laptop secure?

A secure laptop combines protections at several layers. Hardware establishes a trusted foundation; boot and firmware protections help prevent tampering before the operating system starts; the operating system defends against malicious software; encryption protects stored data; and strong account controls, timely updates, and careful configuration reduce other risks.

Start with your threat model. If your main concern is a stolen laptop, full-volume encryption and a strong sign-in method matter. If you handle sensitive business information, firmware protections and centralized administration may also be important. No single feature covers every risk: encryption does not protect an unlocked computer from someone using it, secure boot does not stop phishing, and hardware protections cannot compensate for an account with a weak password.

How to compare laptop security

  • Hardware and boot integrity: Look for a security processor such as TPM 2.0 on Windows, Secure Boot, and protections that help verify the boot process and firmware.
  • Encryption and recovery: Confirm whether the built-in storage is encrypted, whether user credentials protect access to the data, and how you can recover access if you lose those credentials.
  • Identity protection: Use a strong, unique password or passkey where supported, biometrics as a convenient sign-in option, and multifactor authentication for important accounts.
  • Default settings and management: Check which protections are active when the device is delivered and whether you or your organization can manage them.
  • Updates and support: Verify operating-system support and the manufacturer’s firmware and driver update practices for the exact model.
  • Compatibility and workload: Make sure the laptop supports the apps and peripherals you need. A security feature that blocks a required workflow may be disabled or worked around, reducing its practical value.

Windows laptops: what to check

Inspect Windows Security settings

On a Windows device, open Windows Security > Device security to review security features including Secure Boot, core isolation, the security processor (TPM), and device encryption or BitLocker settings. Microsoft says Secure Boot helps prevent a rootkit from loading during startup. Check the specific status shown on your laptop rather than assuming that every feature is enabled.

Device encryption primarily protects data at rest. If the laptop is lost or stolen while powered off, encryption can make the stored data harder to access without authorization. It does not, on its own, protect data on a device that is already unlocked, secure a compromised online account, or stop a user from being tricked by phishing. For the relevant Windows controls, see Microsoft’s guide to Device security in Windows Security.

Consider a Secured-core PC for sensitive work

Microsoft describes Secured-core PCs as a Windows category for people handling sensitive information, with protections that extend to firmware and include dynamic root of trust measurement. The category spans manufacturers including Acer, ASUS, Dell, HP, Lenovo, and Microsoft Surface; it is not one laptop model or an independent security ranking. Read Microsoft’s Secured-core PC overview, then verify that the exact laptop and configuration you are considering qualify.

Microsoft’s Windows 11 business-security page reports a “62% drop in security incidents,” attributing the figure to a Techaisle survey published in September 2024 comparing Windows 11 devices with Windows 10 devices. It is a vendor-reported survey comparison, not a head-to-head test of laptop models or a prediction of an individual buyer’s risk. It should not be treated as proof that any particular Windows laptop is the most secure. See Microsoft’s Windows 11 business-security page.

Apple silicon Macs: what the protections mean

Apple says every Mac with Apple silicon includes a Secure Enclave, a dedicated subsystem isolated from the main processor. Apple also documents encryption for internal APFS storage on Apple silicon and T2 Macs. FileVault adds protection tied to a user’s credentials; on Apple silicon and T2 Macs, Apple says FileVault key handling takes place in the Secure Enclave.

That distinction matters when comparing “encrypted by default” with FileVault. Built-in storage’s underlying hardware encryption does not mean you should skip checking FileVault status or planning how to recover access. Removable and external storage can have different security characteristics from the Mac’s internal drive. Review Apple’s Secure Enclave security documentation and Apple’s FileVault guide for the platform details.

Set up the laptop so its protections remain useful

  1. Check security status: On Windows, open Windows Security > Device security and review the protections shown. On a Mac, check FileVault in the system’s privacy and security settings and consult Apple’s guide for the applicable macOS version.
  2. Enable strong account protection: Use a unique, hard-to-guess sign-in credential. Add multifactor authentication to important online accounts, particularly email and cloud storage.
  3. Keep software current: Install operating-system, firmware, and application updates through the supported update mechanisms for your device.
  4. Plan for recovery: Store recovery keys or recovery information somewhere safe and accessible if your laptop is unavailable. Keep that backup separate from the laptop and do not leave it exposed in an account protected only by the same device.
  5. Secure the data you carry: Review removable drives and external storage separately; do not assume they inherit the internal drive’s protections.

Which laptop should you choose?

If you use Windows for sensitive work, shortlist a Windows 11 Secured-core laptop, then verify the exact model’s certification, shipped settings, support, and management options. If you prefer macOS, an Apple silicon Mac has documented hardware-backed security and FileVault capabilities; check FileVault and recovery setup rather than relying on a broad “encrypted” claim. In either case, choose a device that supports your work and that you can keep updated, locked, encrypted, and recoverable.
