The Moblin v2 Compliance Specification v1.9.1 is a preliminary set of requirements for operating-system vendors building Moblin v2 distributions and independent software vendors building Moblin v2 applications. Intel’s document was last updated December 18, 2009; it is a historical specification, not evidence that any particular product was tested or certified as compliant.

Who the specification was for

The document addresses two roles: operating-system vendors (OSVs), responsible for Moblin v2 distributions, and independent software vendors (ISVs), responsible for applications intended to comply with Moblin v2. It combines requirements shared across netbook, mobile internet device (MID), and in-vehicle infotainment (IVI) platforms with platform-specific addenda.

Its opening page identifies version 1.9.1, names Bob Spencer and Mats Wichmann as author and maintainer, and gives December 18, 2009 as the last-updated date. It also calls the document “preliminary, forward looking, and made available to solicit input,” warning readers to expect changes. Sections marked in blue were pending and might not appear in a final version.

What it covers

The specification spans system-level requirements and application integration. Its main topics include:

#1 Best Overall
  • Differences from the Linux Standard Base (LSB) and kernel configuration
  • Performance, power management, and package management
  • Desktop integration, window management, compositing, and DRI2 graphics support
  • Browser and media requirements, programming languages, and libraries
  • Platform-specific requirements and ISV compliance

Examples in this 2009 version include RPM or Debian package management, specified FreeDesktop.org desktop-integration conventions, compositing in the X Window System, DRI2 support, and a browser based on either Mozilla or WebKit. These are historical requirements in this document; they should not be read as descriptions of current Linux distribution, browser, or package-management practice.

What the suspend-time figures mean

The specification sets thresholds for suspend to RAM (STR): no more than five seconds to suspend and no more than eight seconds to recover. Intel Corporation is named as the source of these figures in the document. They are requirements, not reported benchmark results for a tested device or distribution. The specification gives no S4 suspend-to-disk requirement.

Which parts were unresolved

The MID section is marked undefined and lists possible future topics: security and manageability, telephony, touchscreen components, memory requirements, and camera infrastructure or libraries. The IVI section is also marked undefined.

An open-areas section identifies unresolved technical questions about ELF information for Atom, package format, the required BlueZ version, and missing codec specifications. As a result, the document does not provide a complete, settled requirements baseline for every platform and topic it names.

How to interpret a compliance claim

Version 1.9.1 is a requirements document, not proof of compliance. It does not establish that a particular distribution or application passed a compliance test, that independent testing occurred, or that this preliminary version was later adopted as final. Any claim about a product should identify the relevant version and platform and provide separate evidence of assessment; this specification alone cannot establish present-day compliance or certification.
