1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesIn a general computer context, the “main system chip” is the central processing unit (CPU), also called the processor. It processes data and executes program instructions. The phrase is a broad description, though—not the exact name of a chip in every phone, computer, or other device.
What does the main system chip do?
The CPU carries out program instructions and performs calculations. Intel describes the processor, or CPU, as the “brain of your computer.” In simplified terms, it repeatedly fetches an instruction from memory, decodes what it means, and executes it.

That fetch–decode–execute description is a basic way to understand the processor’s work, not a complete account of every operation in a modern computer. For an overview of the processor’s role, see Intel’s processor explainer; Intel also outlines the instruction cycle.
Is the main system chip always the CPU?
For a general question about a computer’s main processing component, CPU or processor is the usual answer. But “chip” is a broad everyday term, and devices can include several processors with distinct jobs. A CPU, graphics processing unit (GPU), and neural processing unit (NPU), for example, are different processor types; some systems combine them. The word “main” depends on which device and task you mean. Intel compares their roles in its CPU, GPU, and NPU overview.

What about phones and systems-on-chip?
In a phone or embedded device, the principal chip may be described as a system-on-chip (SoC), rather than simply the CPU. The general definition does not identify the exact component or model in a particular device. To find that, check the device’s specifications or documentation.
Definition in brief
The main system chip in a general computer is its CPU (processor): the component that executes program instructions and processes data. For a specific device, identify its main chip from that device’s documentation rather than relying on this general definition. A glossary entry from the University of Anbar uses the wording “the main system chip which processes data in a computer” for the CPU.
