What Is the Mac Task Manager? Activity Monitor and Force Quit Explained

Activity Monitor is the Mac's built-in equivalent of Windows Task Manager. Here is how to open it, what it shows, and how Quit differs from Force Quit.

The Mac task manager is Activity Monitor, the built-in macOS utility that plays the same role as Windows Task Manager. It lists running apps and processes, shows what is using your Mac’s resources, and lets you quit a process that is causing trouble. If you only need to close a frozen app, macOS also has a simpler Force Quit window. Neither requires a download or a purchase.

What “Mac task manager” means

In the process-monitoring sense, Activity Monitor is the Mac’s equivalent of Task Manager. Apple Support’s Activity Monitor User Guide describes it this way: “When your system is acting sluggish or simply not responding, use Activity Monitor to locate and force quit troublesome apps or processes.”

The phrase can also mean other things, so it helps to separate them:

  • Activity Monitor: inspects processes and resource use.
  • Force Quit window: closes an app that has stopped responding.
  • Mission Control, Stage Manager, Split View and desktop Spaces: organize and navigate windows. They do not inspect or end processes.
  • To-do or project-planning apps: a different category entirely. Activity Monitor is not a task or project planner.

How to open Activity Monitor

  1. Open Applications and then the Utilities folder, and double-click Activity Monitor.
  2. Or press Command-Space to open Spotlight, type “Activity Monitor”, and press Return.

Menu labels can differ slightly between macOS releases.

What Activity Monitor shows

Its tabs cover CPU, GPU, memory, energy, disk, network and cache activity, alongside the process list. It can also show CPU activity as a live graph in the Dock icon, which is handy when you want to watch load while working in another app.

A high reading at one moment does not mean a process is harmful. Many legitimate tasks, such as indexing, backups or video exports, briefly use a lot of resources. Look at what a process is, and whether the high use persists, before deciding to end it. Activity Monitor can also show processes hierarchically, which helps you see which process belongs to which.

Quit versus Force Quit

Action Use it for Trade-off
Normal Quit (Command-Q) Closing a responsive app The app can finish its usual quit behavior, such as prompting you to save.
Quit in Activity Monitor Closing a process that is still responsive Behaves like choosing Quit in the app and waits until the process can close safely.
Force Quit An app or process that will not respond Stops it immediately. Apple warns that open files can lose data and that apps depending on the process may have problems.
Activity Monitor Diagnosing what is slowing the Mac More detail than the Force Quit window, so only end processes you understand.

Closing a window does not always quit an app. Behavior varies by app, so a window can disappear while the app keeps running.

How to quit a process in Activity Monitor

  1. Select the process in the list.
  2. Click the Stop control in the toolbar.
  3. Choose Quit first. Choose Force Quit only if it does not close.

Be especially careful with system processes. Force quitting one can disrupt other apps that rely on it.

Window-management tools are not task managers

  • Mission Control shows open windows and Spaces.
  • Stage Manager arranges windows around the app you are focused on.
  • Split View places two app windows side by side.
  • Multiple desktops (Spaces) keep work areas separate.

These help you navigate your workspace. For a slow or unresponsive Mac, use Activity Monitor or Force Quit instead.
