For YouTube Live, set OBS’s streaming keyframe interval to 2 seconds. YouTube recommends a two-second keyframe frequency and says not to exceed four seconds. At 30 fps, a two-second interval equals 60 frames.
What a keyframe interval means
A keyframe is a complete video frame that can serve as a reference for decoding subsequent frames. The keyframe interval is the time between those frames, often described in encoder settings as a GOP (Group of Pictures) size. For YouTube Live, the practical target is one keyframe every two seconds.

Keep the unit clear: “2 seconds” is not “2 frames.” If an encoder asks for an interval as a frame count, multiply the frame rate by the interval in seconds. For example, at 30 fps, 30 × 2 = 60 frames. At a different frame rate, recalculate the frame count to preserve the two-second interval.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteSet the keyframe interval in OBS
- Open the streaming output settings. In OBS, go to Settings > Output. If the Output Mode is set to Advanced, open the Streaming section. OBS labels and layout can vary by version and selected encoder.
- Set Keyframe Interval to 2 seconds. Use the interval field for the streaming encoder. A documented OBS Advanced Output path is Settings > Output > Output Mode > Advanced > Streaming; the exact controls may differ with your OBS version and encoder.
- Check the unit before entering a value. If the field is in seconds, enter 2. If you are setting a custom x264
keyintvalue in frames, use the frame-rate calculation instead: 60 at 30 fps for a two-second interval. - Confirm the service and encoder. Make sure OBS is configured for YouTube Live and that the setting applies to the encoder you are actually using. A displayed setting alone does not confirm what the encoder sends.
YouTube’s guidance for live encoder settings recommends two seconds and sets four seconds as the maximum. The two-second value is the target; do not treat the four-second ceiling as the preferred setting. YouTube’s live encoder settings cover the interval alongside other streaming requirements.

Check the rest of YouTube’s encoder requirements
Keyframe interval is one part of the outgoing stream configuration. YouTube lists these settings for RTMP/RTMPS live streams:
- Video codecs: H.264, H.265 (HEVC), or AV1. Availability depends on the encoder and system; YouTube’s list does not mean every OBS encoder or computer supports every codec.
- Frame rate: up to 60 fps.
- Bitrate mode: CBR.
- Keyframes: every two seconds recommended, with a four-second maximum.
- Audio: AAC or MP3.
- Transport: RTMP or RTMPS; YouTube recommends RTMPS for encrypted transport.
YouTube says it detects encoder settings automatically and transcodes live streams into viewer output formats. Before an important stream, test with audio and movement similar to the real broadcast, check stream health while live, and choose a quality your upload connection can sustain. See YouTube’s current encoder settings guidance for the full platform recommendations.

Troubleshoot a keyframe-frequency warning
If YouTube reports an incorrect video keyframe frequency, YouTube Help advises: “Change so that keyframes are sent every 2 seconds.” The warning concerns the stream YouTube receives, so check the outgoing configuration rather than relying only on the value visible in OBS. YouTube’s live-stream error guidance also notes that ingestion errors can cause incorrect GOP sizes.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →- OBS is set to 2, but the warning remains: Verify the selected streaming encoder and its active output settings. Check whether a custom encoder parameter or another configuration is overriding the field.
- The value is entered as frames: Convert two seconds to frames using the selected frame rate. At 30 fps, that is 60 frames—not 2.
- The warning appears intermittently or the setting seems correct: The issue may involve the actual encoded output or ingestion, not just the displayed interval. Recheck the outgoing stream and review YouTube’s stream-health diagnostics.
- You changed frame rate: Recalculate any frame-count interval so keyframes remain two seconds apart.
