The iPhone Action button is a customizable physical button that replaces the Ring/Silent switch on supported models. Press and hold it to run the function assigned in Settings; depending on the choice, it may open a tool or switch a setting on or off.
What does the iPhone Action button do?
Apple describes the Action button as a control for a function you use often. Its default assignment is Silent Mode, which switches between Silent and Ring for calls and alerts. Unlike an on-screen control, it is a physical button on the iPhone.

Apple’s instruction is: “To perform the action assigned to the Action button, press and hold the Action button.” The same press-and-hold gesture runs whichever assignment you select. For a toggle such as Silent Mode, holding it again switches the setting back.
What can you assign to it?
Apple’s iPhone user guide lists these assignments:

How do you change the Action button assignment?
- Open Settings > Action Button.
- Swipe across the available functions until the one you want is displayed.
- If the selected function offers additional choices, choose the specific item shown beneath it.
After setup, press and hold the physical button to perform the selected action.
Which iPhones have an Action button?
The feature is available only on supported iPhone models. Apple’s control overview names iPhone 17e, iPhone 16e, and iPhone 15 Pro as examples, not a complete compatibility list. Check Apple’s current documentation for your specific model rather than assuming every iPhone has the button.
