The InterPlanetary File System (IPFS) is an open set of peer-to-peer protocols and implementations for addressing, finding, and transferring data by its content rather than only by the server location where it is stored. It is not a cloud-storage company or a guarantee that a file will stay available: participating nodes or services must retain and serve the data.
What does IPFS stand for?
IPFS stands for InterPlanetary File System. The official documentation describes IPFS as protocols, implementations, and a network, depending on context. In practical terms, it is a protocol ecosystem that lets compatible computers identify and exchange data across a peer-to-peer network. IPFS Docs: What is IPFS?
How does IPFS work?
IPFS divides data into blocks and identifies content with content identifiers, or CIDs. Its components organize data, help locate peers that can provide it, and transfer the requested blocks. These include IPLD, distributed hash table (DHT) routing, Bitswap, libp2p, and HTTP gateways. IPFS Docs: How IPFS works
Content identifiers point to data, not a server
A CID is derived from content and encodes details such as the content hash and codec. Unlike a conventional URL, it does not specify the server or location holding the data. A CID identifies particular content, but it is not a promise that anyone is currently hosting a retrievable copy. IPFS Docs: Content Identifiers (CIDs)

The same underlying data can have different CIDs if it is chunked or laid out differently, or encoded using a different codec or CID version. So a CID is not always a single universal name for a file regardless of how it was prepared.
Peers locate and exchange blocks
When an IPFS client requests content, IPFS mechanisms help it find peers that can provide the relevant blocks and retrieve them. A peer-to-peer system can avoid relying on one fixed server address, but it still depends on peers or services having the data and being reachable.
How is IPFS different from cloud storage?
IPFS itself is not a storage provider. It defines ways for systems to address, find, and transfer content; nodes and compatible services supply and serve copies. A storage or pinning provider may offer to retain content on behalf of a user, but that is a service built around IPFS, not the protocol itself. IPFS Docs: What is IPFS?
This distinction matters for availability: publishing a CID does not place a permanent copy somewhere automatically. Content remains retrievable only while a node or service keeps it and can serve it. IPFS Docs: How IPFS works

What is the difference between IPFS and IPNS?
A CID is an immutable address for specific content: change the content, and the CID changes. IPNS is a mutable, signed name that can point to a current IPFS path. A publisher can update what that name resolves to while keeping the name stable; the underlying CID remains an address for its particular version of the content. IPFS Docs: IPNS (InterPlanetary Name System)
Can you access IPFS through a web browser?
An HTTP gateway lets an ordinary web client request IPFS content without implementing IPFS networking itself. Gateways do not all provide the same trust or verification properties: the documentation distinguishes gateway types, so users should not assume that every gateway verifies content in the same way. IPFS Docs: IPFS Gateway
Is IPFS private?
No. IPFS is a public network: CIDs and metadata about participating nodes and the content they provide can be publicly visible. Content addressing helps identify and verify data; it does not control who may access it. Encrypt content separately if it must remain confidential. IPFS Docs: Privacy and encryption

The IPFS documentation points newcomers to three software entry points: IPFS Desktop, a graphical interface; Kubo, a command-line implementation; and IPFS Companion, a browser extension. These are options for interacting with the ecosystem, not required hardware or storage products. IPFS Documentation
