For most Samsung refrigerators in the U.S., Samsung recommends setting the refrigerator to 38°F and the freezer to -2°F. Your model’s manual takes precedence if it specifies different settings. These are target settings—not food-safety limits: keep refrigerated food below 40°F and frozen food below 0°F.
Recommended Samsung fridge and freezer settings
Samsung’s U.S. guidance recommends 38°F for the refrigerator and -2°F for the freezer on most models. Some Samsung control panels show bars instead of temperatures; Samsung recommends three lit bars for each compartment on those models. Use your model’s manual if its recommendation differs.

For example, the manual for the Samsung Dacor DRF36C500SR recommends 37°F (3°C) for the refrigerator and 0°F (-18°C) for the freezer. That is a model-specific recommendation, not a replacement for the general setting on every Samsung refrigerator. A set point is the temperature you ask the appliance to maintain; a safety limit is the threshold food should not exceed. Samsung’s U.S. guidance says refrigerated food should stay below 40°F and frozen food below 0°F. The recommended freezer setting of -2°F gives a colder target than that upper limit.

For Samsung refrigerators sold in Canada, Samsung gives the corresponding limits as below 4°C (40°F) for refrigerated food and at or below -18°C (0°F) for frozen food, and attributes those limits to Health Canada. Its Canadian guidance lists recommended settings of 3°C (38°F) for the refrigerator and -19°C (-2°F) for the freezer. Samsung Canada’s guidance applies to that regional context.
How to check the actual temperature
The number on the control panel does not necessarily show the temperature at every spot in the compartment. Samsung says the display represents an average; the back and bottom can be colder, and opening the door affects readings.

- For the refrigerator, place a thermometer in a glass of water near the middle of the compartment.
- For the freezer, place a thermometer between frozen packages. Do not put it in water.
- Keep the doors closed while the reading settles. Samsung says it can take up to eight hours to get an accurate reading when the doors are not opened.
A refrigerator thermometer is useful if you want to verify the temperature rather than rely only on the control-panel setting.
What to do if a compartment is too warm
If a thermometer shows the refrigerator above 40°F or the freezer above 0°F, Samsung advises lowering the corresponding setting. After changing it, give the compartment time to stabilize before checking again; Samsung’s U.S. guidance says to wait 28 hours before rechecking if the temperature remains too warm.
