Seven hours is a realistic target for light work or browsing on some gaming laptops, but it is not a dependable expectation for playing demanding games unplugged. In two recent laptop tests, web or general battery runtime reached about seven to 14 hours while a dedicated gaming test lasted only 55 to 87 minutes. Compare results from the same kind of workload, not a manufacturer’s maximum or a web test against a gaming benchmark.
Does a gaming laptop last seven hours while gaming?
The available test results do not support treating seven hours as normal runtime for sustained, demanding gaming. A laptop may last seven hours or longer during lighter tasks, yet drain far faster when its graphics hardware is working hard. The phrase “seven-hour battery life” is therefore useful only when it identifies the workload and test conditions.

These are results for the configurations and tests reviewed, not guarantees for every version of either laptop. The paired results show why a long general battery-test result cannot be used to promise a similar stretch of play. Tom’s Guide’s Zephyrus G16 review and its Legion 5i Gen 11 review report the respective results.
What does “seven hours” mean in a laptop listing?
A manufacturer maximum
Lenovo’s announcement for 16-inch LOQ gaming laptops with an 80 Wh battery says “up to seven hours.” “Up to” describes a maximum under some conditions; the announcement excerpt does not establish seven hours of gaming runtime. Treat it as a manufacturer claim, not an independent gaming-battery result, and check the exact configuration before relying on it. Lenovo’s LOQ announcement dates to approximately 2023, so it also does not establish current availability.

A light-use or web-surfing result
Browsing, documents, coding, and video playback place different demands on a laptop than a demanding game. A web-surfing result such as the Legion’s 7 hours 3 minutes answers how long that tested machine lasted in that particular browsing test; it does not predict how long it will run a game.
A dedicated gaming-battery test
For unplugged play, look for a result from a named gaming workload. PC Gamer describes its PCMark gaming battery test as looping 3DMark Fire Strike in a window until the laptop runs out of charge. That is a more relevant comparison for gaming than a general battery test, though it is still a benchmark rather than a promise about every game or setting. PC Gamer’s gaming-laptop battery comparison also reports that most gaming laptops it tested offered much less than seven hours of battery gaming.

How to compare gaming laptops fairly
When a laptop’s battery life matters, use this checklist to separate evidence that answers your question from numbers that merely sound impressive:

- Identify the tested configuration. Processor, graphics chip, display resolution and refresh rate, and battery size can differ between versions sold under the same laptop name.
- Check test conditions. Brightness, refresh rate, wireless use, keyboard lighting, and power mode can affect battery results. ASUS’s stated standard battery-test environment for its 2026 Zephyrus G16 page includes Windows, 150-nit brightness, a 60 Hz refresh rate, and lighting off. Those controlled light-use conditions are not evidence of gaming runtime. ASUS ROG’s Zephyrus G16 product page provides those test details.
- Look for unplugged performance details. If a review explains how performance or settings change on battery, use that information alongside runtime. A long result alone does not tell you whether the laptop can sustain the gaming experience you want.
- Check the region and SKU. Configurations and availability can vary by market. Confirm the exact model number and specifications for the version you can buy.
- Do not rank by battery capacity alone. A higher watt-hour figure does not, by itself, establish proportionally longer runtime across laptops with different components, displays, and settings.
What should you expect for different uses?
For coding, documents, browsing, or lighter multitasking, seven hours may be achievable on some machines, depending on the workload and conditions. HP’s OMEN 16 Slim review gives manufacturer editorial guidance of approximately six to seven hours for light productivity and 1.5 to two hours for gaming on battery; that is guidance, not a universal result for gaming laptops. For demanding games away from an outlet, plan around the laptop’s tested gaming-benchmark runtime rather than its web or manufacturer-maximum figure. If you need longer sessions while travelling, a USB-C laptop power bank is only a possible charging option: first verify that the exact laptop accepts USB-C charging and that the power bank supplies compatible wattage. The available test results do not establish that a power bank will enable seven hours of ordinary high-performance gaming.

How to choose if seven hours is non-negotiable
- Decide what must last seven hours. If the requirement is work and browsing, focus on independent light-use tests that resemble your day. If it is gaming, require a named gaming-battery test; do not substitute a manufacturer’s “up to” figure.
- Compare the same kind of test across candidates. Record the test name, runtime, tested configuration, and conditions before choosing. Avoid ranking a laptop tested for web browsing against one tested in a gaming loop.
- Verify the exact laptop on sale. Confirm its processor, graphics, display, battery capacity, regional model, and charging support. A review result applies to the tested configuration, not automatically to every SKU.
- Set expectations for unplugged play. If the gaming-benchmark result is far below seven hours, plan for shorter sessions or access to charging rather than assuming light-use runtime will carry over to games.
