What kind of game is The Expanse: Osiris Reborn?
Owlcat Games announced The Expanse: Osiris Reborn on June 6, 2025, as a third-person sci-fi action RPG. Steam categorizes it as a single-player action RPG. Its character creator lets players choose an Earther, Martian, or Belter, and the official description says the player leads a specialist crew and commands a ship.

That makes this a crew-led action RPG rather than a multiplayer game or a direct retelling of the TV series. The story and characters described so far are specific to the game, even though it draws on the franchise’s setting.

The player character is a Pinkwater Security mercenary on shore leave at Eros. In the spoiler-light premise outlined by Owlcat Community Manager Gala Dolgikh on Xbox Wire, the protagonist and their identical twin, J, join Pinkwater Security. A massacre on Eros kills friends and colleagues; the survivors escape aboard an experimental ship belonging to the enemy. The incident leads into a wider conspiracy and a pursuit by a powerful adversary.

The crew introduced so far
- J: The protagonist’s identical twin and part of the Pinkwater Security setup.
- Zafar: A mechanic who helps guide an early mission. He appeared in the beta preview.
- Regina: A networker who can help find allies and provide ranged support.
- Teo: The medic aboard the ship Gemini.
- Michael: A mercenary associated with a competitor.
Owlcat presents the wider group as potential crew; the beta preview specifically included Zafar.

How does gameplay work?
Owlcat describes dynamic third-person combat built around taking cover, using abilities, and coordinating with companions. Two companions accompany the player in the field. Other crew members can assist remotely, for example by disabling systems or distracting enemies, and players can issue commands in real time.
Weapons, gadgets, and the beta preview
A March 2026 beta preview described shotguns, assault rifles, sniper rifles, pistols, and submachine guns, along with destructible cover and grenades. The preview also showed planned gadgets such as a tactical scanner and small drones, plus an engine-equipped grenade intended for zero-gravity combat. Owlcat’s Exploits system lets companions use openings in combat to attack groups of enemies.

These details describe beta content and planned systems, not a review of the final game. Owlcat said the beta, made available to eligible Founders on April 22, 2026, contained a full early-game mission and showcased mechanics, gunplay, skill progression, voiced dialogue, and cut-scenes. The publisher estimated one to two hours to complete, depending on play style, and cautioned that performance could vary by hardware and might not reflect the final game.
Choices and companion relationships
The official Steam description says relationships with companions can improve or deteriorate in response to the player’s choices and leadership. Xbox Wire says missions present choices that may have long-lasting consequences. These are announced design features; their final scope and outcomes have not been independently established.
Is it connected to The Expanse books or TV show?
Yes: the game is set in the same broad Expanse universe represented by both the books and the TV show. Xbox Wire describes a human-settled system spanning Luna, Mars, and the Asteroid Belt. The game’s official descriptions name Ganymede, Ceres, Mars, and Luna, and Steam mentions ruined habitats and political strongholds.

The confirmed premise centers on a Pinkwater mercenary, Eros, and the game’s own crew and conspiracy. The announced information does not establish that the game adapts a particular book or season of the show.

When does it come out, and where can you play?
There is no specific launch day announced in the cited release information. Owlcat’s March 26, 2026 announcement gives a spring 2027 window, while Steam currently lists Q2 2027. Treat both as planned timing for an unreleased game, not a confirmed date.

The platform and subscription details are announcements, not confirmation that every storefront or service has a final listing or launch arrangement.
How did the beta work?
The beta was for eligible Founders who purchased Miller’s Pack or the Collector’s Edition. Owlcat’s April 22, 2026 follow-up said it had become available and explained platform activation. This was paid Founder access to a preview, distinct from the planned full release. The available information does not specify physical contents for either edition, so the name “Collector’s Edition” alone should not be taken to mean it includes a physical box.

The available official and storefront information does not establish the final price, exact launch day, final PC system requirements, or final-build performance. No performance estimate from the beta should be treated as a guarantee for the released game.
