During setup, choose to copy from an old Android phone or restore an associated Google-account backup, then select the data to transfer. Motorola lists apps and app data, photos and videos, text messages and attachments, contacts, music, and other common items as transferable, but the exact options depend on the devices and your selections.
Before you start
- Charge and turn on both phones.
- Connect the phones to Wi-Fi; Motorola recommends Wi-Fi for the setup process.
- Keep the Samsung nearby and available until you have checked the Motorola.
- Know the Google account associated with the backup or transfer, if prompted.
Copy data during Motorola setup
- Start setting up the Motorola and connect it to Wi-Fi.
- When prompted, choose the option to copy data from an old Android phone or from an associated Google-account backup. Follow the Motorola screen prompts to continue.
- Select the apps and data categories you want to copy. The available choices vary by phone, data type, and selection. Motorola says SIM setup can be skipped if needed.
- If offered, leave Google Drive backup enabled. Keep the Samsung available while the copy and setup finish.
- Open the Motorola’s apps, messages, contacts, and photo gallery to check that important content arrived before erasing or trading in the Samsung.
Motorola’s Android copy guide lists apps and app data, music, photos and videos, Google accounts, phone and SIM contacts, text messages, message attachments, most settings, wallpaper, and call history among the items the setup flow may copy. This is not a promise of a complete clone: availability depends on the phones and the choices shown during setup.

What may not transfer automatically
Motorola’s support guidance identifies several exclusions from its described copy flow. Plan to handle these separately if they matter to you:
- Downloads such as PDFs
- Apps installed outside Google Play
- Accounts other than Google
- Contacts or calendars associated with non-Google services
- Ringtones
Some apps also require you to sign in again or restore their private data through the app’s own supported process. Check important conversations and attachments, rather than assuming every messaging app stores or restores its data the same way.

Can you use Samsung Smart Switch?
Samsung’s Smart Switch instructions describe transfers to Galaxy phones and tablets, with supported content varying by connected device. They do not establish Smart Switch as the receiving method for a Motorola phone. For a Samsung-to-Motorola move, use Motorola’s setup copy process on the destination phone.
If you skipped the transfer or the Samsung is unavailable
You skipped copying during first setup
Look for an Android Setup notification or a Motorola setup-continuation option such as “Finish setting up your device.” The exact wording and availability vary by model and software version. Follow that flow to resume setup and copy data if the option is available.

The Samsung is broken or unavailable
Motorola says you can copy files using a cloud backup associated with your Google account. Sign in to the relevant account during Motorola setup and review the restore choices. A backup is not necessarily a copy of every local file or every app’s private data, so check what it contains and verify important items after restoration.

You are considering a cable or external storage
Motorola’s standard setup instructions do not establish a cable, OTG adapter, microSD card, or USB drive as necessary for this transfer. Before relying on one, confirm compatibility with your exact Motorola model and the specific transfer method. Samsung’s detailed wired and external-storage Smart Switch steps are for a Galaxy destination, not instructions for receiving data on a Motorola.

Check the Motorola before wiping the Samsung
- Confirm that key message threads and attachments are present.
- Check photos and videos, along with any files you expected to bring over.
- Open essential apps and sign in where required; use each app’s own restore method for data it did not bring across.
- Review contacts for duplicates. Motorola’s model-specific guidance recommends merging duplicates after migration.
