The decisive difference is control over the audit trail: standard TallyPrime lets you configure Edit Log, while TallyPrime Edit Log keeps it permanently enabled and cannot be switched off.
That makes this primarily an audit-control and governance decision—not a choice between a basic and a feature-rich accounting engine.

Tally describes the two editions as having the same feature set for running a business. The practical distinction is whether the logging policy can be changed: TallyPrime Edit Log cannot be disabled, whereas standard TallyPrime permits configuration of Edit Log.

TallyPrime is Tally’s standard business-management edition. Depending on the licensed configuration and country, it supports bookkeeping, sales and purchases, receipts and payments, stock management, payroll, tax workflows, banking, financial statements and management reports. Product availability can vary with the release, geography, licence type, Tally Software Services status and connected integrations; see Tally’s getting-started overview and product documentation.

It is inaccurate to describe standard TallyPrime as having no audit trail. It includes Edit Log functionality; the administrator can decide whether it is enabled and how it is used.
What TallyPrime Edit Log changes
TallyPrime Edit Log is the edition for organisations that need an always-on change history. When logging is active, supported transactions and masters can show:
- Creation, alteration and deletion activity
- The user who performed the activity
- The date and time
- Version history
- Differences between an earlier and later version
The log can cover vouchers and masters such as ledgers, stock items and groups. It improves traceability, but it does not by itself prove that a change was authorised, supported by documents or reviewed. Access controls, approvals, backups and retention procedures remain separate controls.
Tally documents an important boundary: the Company Edit Log report tracks company activities that affect transaction and master logs, but changes made through Company Alteration are not tracked in exactly the same way. Therefore, “supported transaction and master changes” is more accurate than “every action in Tally.”

Are the accounting and business features different?
No principal feature tier is created by choosing Edit Log. Tally’s comparison presents accounting, inventory, payroll, compliance, reporting, user security and related business capabilities as shared across the product family. Individual tax functions, connected services and release features can still depend on country, edition, subscription and integration status.
Choose based on the logging policy you need, not on an expectation of a different general ledger, inventory engine or reporting system.
Can Edit Log be switched off?
Standard TallyPrime
Edit Log can be enabled or disabled according to the company’s configuration and control policy. That flexibility is useful for internal review or testing, but it also means an authorised user may be able to create a period without a continuous trail.

TallyPrime Edit Log
The edition keeps Edit Log active and does not provide a switch to turn it off. This is useful when the product configuration itself must enforce a continuous logging policy.

Tally introduced Edit Log with TallyPrime Release 2.1 in both forms: an Edit Log edition with logging always enabled and standard TallyPrime with logging optional. Current regional download pages can show different release numbers, so verify the installer for your country before deployment: US downloads and global downloads.
How to enable Edit Log in standard TallyPrime
Tally’s documented path (labels can vary by release) is:
- Open the company.
- Open Company Menu with Alt+K and choose Alter.
- Press F12 for configuration.
- Enable Set Edit Log Applicability.
- In the company-alteration screen, set Enable Edit Log to Yes.
Check the labels in your installed release against Tally’s official instructions: audit trail in TallyPrime. Enabling the feature is forward-looking; Tally says subsequent changes are recorded. It does not reconstruct every change made before activation.

How to view and compare changes
- Open the relevant master or voucher in alteration mode.
- Press Alt+Q to open Edit Log.
- Review the version, activity, username and date/time.
- Select a version and press Enter to compare it with the previous version.
F12 controls the display of certain configuration-based values in comparisons. A resaved version may appear in history but have no drillable difference when no data actually changed. Tally’s workflow is described in Edit Log for masters and transactions.

These are three different questions: what the record currently contains, whether it was changed, and what the before-and-after values were. Edit Log helps with the latter two where the change is supported and recorded.
Which edition should you choose?

Tally positions the Edit Log edition for applicable Indian statutory audit-trail contexts, including the relevant MCA framework. That does not mean every Indian business, or any business outside India, is automatically required to use it. Confirm the obligation for your entity and reporting period.

Tally says an upgrade from an earlier TallyPrime version can start TallyPrime Edit Log in licensed mode, while users of TallyPrime or Tally.ERP 9 may need to migrate company data. Installation is broadly similar, but the setup file, application appearance and launch screen identify the edition. Use Tally’s installation guidance and complete these checks:

- Back up the company data before migration or upgrade.
- Test the target release with a copy of the company first.
- Confirm the regional installer and licence activation.
- Tell users that logging is permanent in the Edit Log edition.
- Review storage, backup and housekeeping plans.
- Have an accountant or Tally partner validate statutory requirements.
Both editions can accumulate history, but Tally warns that frequent alterations increase Edit Log and overall company-data size. Automatic voucher renumbering can create log activity for subsequent vouchers, especially when vouchers are inserted or deleted. Sensible numbering, user training and regular backups reduce avoidable growth.

What Edit Log does—and does not—establish
- Deletion tracking is not restoration: a deleted voucher may be visible in the history, but the log does not automatically restore it or reverse its accounting effect.
- Activation is not retroactive: changes made before Edit Log was enabled are not automatically reconstructed.
- An always-on log is not a complete audit programme: it does not replace approvals, segregation of duties, access reviews, immutable backups or auditor examination.
- Coverage is not universal: use Tally’s documented scope for supported transactions and masters, and treat company-setting changes separately.
Does TallyPrime Edit Log cost more?
There is no single worldwide surcharge established solely for the Edit Log edition. Pricing depends on country, Silver or Gold licensing, user count, subscription or lifetime terms, Tally Software Services, taxes and commercial conditions. Use the regional store rather than converting another country’s price; see Tally’s global, US and India buying pages.
For orientation, the India store pages consulted in August 2026 displayed Silver examples of ₹750 per month, ₹8,100 per year or ₹22,500 lifetime, plus 18% GST; Gold was listed at higher multi-user prices, including a ₹67,500 lifetime example plus 18% GST. These are dated regional listings, not a universal Edit Log price, and should be rechecked before purchase. Tally Software Services and connected-service terms can also affect the total cost.
Bottom line
TallyPrime Edit Log is not a premium bundle with extra accounting features. It is essentially the same TallyPrime business system configured as a permanently logged edition. Select standard TallyPrime when configurable logging is acceptable; select TallyPrime Edit Log when an uninterrupted change history is a requirement and the loss of an off switch is an intentional control.
