What Is the Difference Between Supercross and Motocross?

Supercross is generally stadium-based on a purpose-built course; motocross typically uses outdoor terrain with hills, jumps and turns. Their event formats differ too.

Supercross is generally raced on a specially built course inside a stadium; motocross is generally raced on outdoor terrain with hills, jumps, and tight turns. In AMA outdoor motocross, riders typically race two motos in each class, with the results combined for overall placing. Supercross event formats can vary, so details such as heats and mains depend on the current rules and event.

How do the venues and tracks differ?

Supercross: a purpose-built stadium course

The American Motorcyclist Association (AMA) defines Supercross as stadium racing on a specially constructed track. Its 2026 AMA Supercross Championship Rulebook puts it this way: “Supercross is conducted within a stadium-type facility on a specially constructed racetrack.” The course is built for the event rather than being a permanent natural-terrain circuit.

Motocross: a terrain course

Motocross is associated with man-made or modified terrain courses. The AMA’s Motocross overview describes them as “man-made or man-modified terrain courses featuring steep hills, jumps and tight turns, and typically feature two races — called motos — in each class.” In short, the distinction is not simply indoors versus outdoors: the course setting and design are central, with motocross typically using terrain rather than a stadium-built layout.

How does the race format differ?

Motocross commonly uses two motos

In AMA outdoor motocross, each class typically has two motos, and their combined results determine overall placing. The AMA’s beginner guidance describes outdoor motocross events as generally using this two-moto format. The exact way results are combined and any event-specific procedures should be checked in the applicable series rules.

Supercross procedures depend on the event

Do not assume every Supercross round uses the same sequence or race lengths. Qualifying, heats, mains, Triple Crown events, and scoring details are governed by the current championship rules and event information. The AMA publishes Supercross rules and bulletins for that purpose. Its championship includes 450SX and 250SX; 250SX is divided into Eastern and Western regional divisions, each with its own title, as described on the AMA’s AMA Supercross page.

Which term fits the event you are watching?

If the race is in a stadium on a temporary, purpose-built track, it is Supercross. If it is on an outdoor terrain course, it is generally motocross. Both are forms of off-road motorcycle racing, but this comparison describes AMA usage; rules and formats should not be assumed identical across every country or series.
