A drip coffee maker brews filter coffee as water flows through grounds and a filter; an espresso machine forces near-boiling water under pressure through a compacted coffee bed to make concentrated espresso. The practical choice depends on which drinks you prefer, how many servings you make, and how much control you want over preparation.
How drip coffee and espresso are brewed
Drip coffee uses gravity and a filter
In a conventional drip brewer, hot water passes through ground coffee and a filter, with gravity driving the flow. The result is filter coffee rather than espresso. Grind guidance depends on the brewer and recipe; Breville’s drip-filter recipe, for example, calls for a grind resembling coarse table salt.

Espresso uses pressure and a compact coffee bed
The Specialty Coffee Association (SCA) defines espresso as “a thick, concentrated coffee brewed under pressure.” Its technical standard defines an espresso machine as one that forces pressurized water near boiling point through a puck and filter to produce espresso. Grind, dose, temperature, pressure, brew ratio, and time all affect the preparation. [SCA 350-2021]

The SCA article reproduces a heritage Specialty Coffee Association of America definition with a 25–35 ml beverage volume, 7–9 g of coffee for a single (14–18 g for a double), water at 195–205°F, pressure of 9–10 atmospheres, and a 20–30 second brew time. These are historical reference values, not universal instructions for every current espresso recipe.

The same article reports results from a 2017 Barista Guild of America survey of 275 respondents; 76% were from the United States. Among respondents, 93% considered their extraction a double shot, 66% reported an average dose of 18–20 g, and 51% reported an average extraction time of 25–30 seconds. The article summarized the average shot as 18–20 g in, 36.5 g out, in 25–30 seconds, at 9 bars and 200°F. These describe that survey and its summary—not all baristas today or a required recipe. Which machine fits your coffee routine?
| Consideration | Drip coffee maker | Espresso machine |
|---|---|---|
| Drinks | Filter or drip coffee | Espresso shots and drinks built on espresso |
| Serving pattern | Often suited to making multiple servings in one brew; check the brewer’s stated capacity. | Makes controlled shots; check whether the machine steams milk and how many drinks you need to make in sequence. |
| Preparation | Typically a simpler grounds-and-water workflow. | Often involves finer grinding and more control over dose and extraction; automation varies by machine. |
| How to assess it | SCA-certified home brewers have passed the program’s third-party testing for home-brewing quality and consistency. | Review credible specifications and independent testing; pressure alone does not establish quality. |
The SCA certified home brewer directory lists eligible models and explains its home equipment program. Certification applies to listed models, so check the directory for current status; it is not by itself a claim that a model is best for every household.

What to check before buying
- Start with your usual drink. Choose drip if you mainly want filter coffee; choose espresso if you want shots or espresso-based drinks.
- Match capacity to your routine. Check a drip brewer’s stated batch capacity. For espresso, consider whether you will make several drinks in sequence and whether milk steaming is included.
- Consider your preferred workflow. Espresso commonly asks for more control over grind, dose, and extraction, though machines differ in automation. A burr grinder can help control grind size, but whether you need a separate one depends on your machine and current setup.
- Use relevant quality evidence. For drip models, check whether the exact model appears in the SCA directory. For espresso machines, assess credible specifications and independent testing rather than treating pressure as a quality verdict.
KitchenAid also frames brewing method, pressure, grind size, and drink options as comparison criteria in its coffee maker versus espresso machine guide; manufacturer guidance is useful for understanding features, but is not independent comparative testing.
