Random freezes, missing sound and display glitches usually trace back to one bad driver. Find and replace yours safely.Free scan · under a minuteLook for compute use that does not match the server’s expected AI workload, unfamiliar processes or persistence, unexplained outbound connections or DNS queries, and cloud-account activity nobody authorized. No single sign proves a server is infected: compare host, network, and cloud logs with the server’s normal workload, then investigate promptly if several indicators agree.
What signs should you look for?
CPU or GPU use that the workload cannot explain
Persistent CPU or GPU activity, elevated GPU temperature, or power use outside the expected training or inference schedule deserves attention. AWS recommends watching for unusual CPU, network, or GPU usage spikes in its crypto-mining detection guidance. There is no universal utilization threshold that identifies a miner: a busy GPU during a training run may be normal, while sustained activity after jobs have ended is more suspicious. Compare with the server’s own baseline, job schedule, and workload logs.

Unfamiliar processes or persistence mechanisms
Identify processes consuming resources and examine their executable paths, owners, command lines, parent processes, and launch times. Look for unexpected services, scheduled tasks, startup entries, or newly installed applications. In containerized environments, inspect both the host and relevant containers or Kubernetes workloads. Amazon GuardDuty Runtime Monitoring describes findings that can identify binaries associated with mining activity and provide process and process-lineage context.
Unexpected network connections and DNS queries
Check for outbound connections or DNS queries to unfamiliar destinations and infrastructure associated with cryptocurrency mining. Review resolver logs alongside firewall or flow logs, endpoint telemetry, and security alerts. AWS documents cryptocurrency-related DNS and runtime findings; Google Cloud recommends DNS logging and describes findings for known bad IP addresses and domains in its cryptomining detection best practices. A matching indicator is a lead to investigate, not proof by itself; destinations and indicators can change over time.

Unexpected cloud-account or identity activity
Check audit and identity logs for compute resources nobody recognizes, quota increases, GPU driver extension deployments, role changes, unusual sign-ins, or credential use. Microsoft’s cloud compute resource abuse guidance identifies unexpected quota increases and suspicious GPU-extension deployment as useful signals in Azure environments. An attacker using a legitimate tenant account may make actions appear routine, so verify that each change maps to an approved operator or automation.
Security product alerts
Review runtime, workload, DNS, and control-plane findings from your cloud provider. GuardDuty AI Protection documents coverage around AWS AI workloads and related suspicious activity. Google Cloud distinguishes events that may precede mining from findings indicating that mining activity is underway. What a service can observe depends on the features and plans enabled in your environment.

How to investigate suspicious activity
- Compare activity with the workload baseline. Check current and historical CPU and GPU use against job schedules, workload logs, and similar hosts. Establish whether the activity coincides with a legitimate training, inference, data-loading, or maintenance task.
- Trace the processes using compute. Record executable paths, ownership, command lines, parent-process lineage, launch times, and persistence settings. Check containers, Kubernetes workloads, and the host where applicable.
- Correlate network evidence. Compare DNS resolver logs, firewall or flow logs, endpoint telemetry, and security alerts. Do not treat one IP address, domain, or alert as a definitive diagnosis.
- Review cloud audit and identity records. Examine resource creation, GPU extension deployment, role changes, quota increases, unusual sign-ins, and credential use. Confirm each action against approved operators and automation.
- Check whether the activity is authorized. Some environments intentionally perform cryptocurrency or blockchain activity. GuardDuty notes that a cryptocurrency-related finding may be expected in such an environment. Suppress alerts only for known, authorized assets and activity, rather than broadly silencing similar findings.
What to do if you suspect a compromise
Treat credible mining evidence as a possible sign of broader access, not merely an unwanted process. In a documented intrusion, CISA reported that attackers installed XMRig on an unpatched server, then moved laterally, compromised credentials, and established persistence. Its advisory AA22-320A recommends immediately isolating affected systems, collecting and reviewing logs and artifacts, and capturing memory and forensic images before applying mitigations. It also advises investigating connected systems when lateral movement is suspected.
