What Is the Consumer Technology Association (CTA)?

The Consumer Technology Association is a U.S. industry trade association. Learn what CTA does, how it relates to CES and how its history began in 1924.

The Consumer Technology Association (CTA) is a U.S. trade association representing companies in the consumer technology industry. It advocates on policy, conducts research, develops industry standards and owns and produces CES. CTA is the association; CES is the event brand it produces.

What the Consumer Technology Association does

CTA describes its role as bringing technology companies together and representing the industry’s interests. Its work includes advocacy with regulators and legislators, research, standards development and producing CES. These activities make CTA an industry organization, not a consumer electronics manufacturer. CTA’s About page outlines its role.

  • Advocacy: CTA engages with policymakers and public-policy stakeholders on issues affecting the consumer technology industry.
  • Research: CTA provides research intended to inform its members and the wider industry.
  • Standards: CTA develops technical standards; it says its standards are ANSI-accredited.
  • CES: CTA owns and produces CES, the technology event.

CTA and CES are related, but not the same

CTA is the trade association. CES is an event brand owned and produced by CTA. CTA’s description of itself as the “brand behind CES” does not mean the association and the event are interchangeable: one is an organization with members and industry programs, while the other is an event. CTA’s About page describes that relationship.

CTA’s history and current scale

CTA traces its origin to 1924, when it was formed as the Radio Manufacturers Association by Chicago radio manufacturers amid patent disputes and proposed legislation. Its name and the industry it represents have changed over time. CTA’s history page says the association now represents more than 1,300 companies. That is CTA’s current count, which may change; it is not an independently measured or dated historical statistic.

CTA also reports that its standards program has more than 150 standards and over 1,100 active participants. These are current counts reported on its Standards page; the page does not state a publication year for them, so treat them as changeable program figures rather than fixed totals.

Who belongs to CTA?

CTA membership is for organizations, not individual consumers looking to buy products. CTA describes its members as companies ranging from startups to global brands. Membership can provide access to research, connections, CES-related benefits and opportunities to participate in member groups and collaborate on policy positions and standards. CTA’s membership page describes these benefits; current terms should be confirmed with CTA.

Standards committee participation is a separate route into CTA’s standards work. CTA says anyone except members of the press is eligible to join; CTA members participate without charge, while non-members pay an annual fee. It directs prospective participants to contact CTA about joining. Fees and requirements can change, so check CTA’s standards participation page for current details.

What CTA is not

CTA is not a retailer, a product brand or the CES event itself. Its public-facing work is primarily organizational: representing companies, engaging on policy, conducting research, developing standards and convening the industry. Consumers may encounter CTA through CES or technology standards, but membership and committee participation are aimed at organizations and industry participants rather than ordinary product buyers.
