What Is The Build Limit In Minecraft? Overworld Height Limits Explained

In the standard Minecraft Overworld you can build to y=320 and dig down to y=-64, a 384-block range from the 1.18 update. Bedrock's legacy Old worlds have a 128-block maximum.

In the standard Overworld, you can build up to y=320 and dig down to y=-64, a total vertical range of 384 blocks. That range came with the Caves & Cliffs Part II update (version 1.18) and applies to both Minecraft Java Edition and Bedrock Edition. The one common exception is Bedrock’s legacy Old world type, which has a maximum height of 128 blocks.

The standard Overworld limits

Official Minecraft material gives the same coordinates for both editions once the 1.18 update is installed. Use the table below as the reference for a standard Overworld world.

Setting Java Edition Bedrock Edition
Top build boundary y=320 (1.18 and later) y=320 (1.18.0 and later, new and existing worlds)
Bottom of the expanded world y=-64 (1.18 and later) y=-64 (1.18.0 and later, new and existing worlds)
Total vertical range 384 blocks Not stated as a single figure in the cited release material; the 320 and -64 bounds imply 384 blocks

The Bedrock announcement described the change as 50% more vertical space to build and explore. The Java release notes describe the range as expanded by 64 blocks upward and 64 blocks downward.

What changed in 1.18

Before 1.18, the Overworld’s vertical space was smaller, and the new limits expanded both the top and the bottom. The Caves & Cliffs Part II feature overview, published by Mojang Studios on December 3, 2021, states the practical result in plain terms: players can build up to y=320, or dig down to y=-64 to reach larger caves and new biomes.

The exception: Bedrock’s legacy Old world type

Bedrock’s Old world type is finite and has a maximum height of 128 blocks. Minecraft’s FAQ states that existing Old world type worlds did not receive the 1.18 height increase, so the y=320 and y=-64 coordinates do not apply to them. The FAQ page does not show a publication date in the version reviewed, so treat its wording as the current official explanation rather than a dated statement.

To check which situation you are in:

  • Confirm your edition: Java or Bedrock.
  • Confirm your game version. The 1.18 limits apply to version 1.18 and later on Java, and 1.18.0 and later on Bedrock.
  • Confirm your world type. If you are on Bedrock and playing an Old world created before the update, expect a 128-block maximum height.

What these figures do not cover

The cited official material addresses the standard Overworld. It does not establish the same limits for the Nether, the End, custom servers, add-ons, or modded installations, so do not assume those share the Overworld coordinates. If you are working in one of those settings, check the documentation for that specific version or server.

Are these numbers still current?

As of October 2026, the official 1.18-era coordinates above are the reference values for standard Overworld worlds. Future game updates could change generation or build boundaries, so check Minecraft’s official release notes for any later version before relying on these numbers for a new project.

The Bottom Line

For a standard Overworld world on Java or Bedrock 1.18 or later, the build limit is y=320 at the top and y=-64 at the bottom. The only common exception is Bedrock’s legacy Old world type, which tops out at 128 blocks.
