What Is the Best Architecture for Scaling Livestream Chat?

A scalable livestream chat separates WebSocket connections, message policy, channel routing, and fanout—and plans explicitly for hot channels, duplicates, reconnect gaps, and overload.

The strongest starting point is to separate persistent client connections from message routing and fanout. Use horizontally scalable WebSocket gateways for connections, validate and moderate messages on an ingress path, route them by channel or another stable conversation key, then distribute accepted messages through fanout workers. Keep optional durable storage and abuse controls independently scalable, and plan a special path for unusually busy channels. The right broker, capacity, and delivery guarantees depend on measured traffic—not on a universal server count or a default choice between Redis, Kafka, and a managed service.

Why livestream chat needs more than a WebSocket server

A WebSocket gives a client a persistent, two-way connection. It does not, by itself, solve how to accept messages safely, route them to the right room, deliver them to thousands of viewers, retain them, or recover after a disconnect. Those are related but distinct workloads.

At modest scale, one service may handle several of these jobs. As traffic grows, separating them makes it possible to scale connection handling independently from message processing and recipient fanout. It also limits the blast radius when a particular stage is slow or overloaded.

Twitch Engineering’s 2015 description of its chat system called it a highly scalable real-time distributed system and described Edge services receiving and distributing messages between clients and backend services, with Pubsub distributing messages internally across Edge nodes. That historical example illustrates hierarchical fanout, not a current implementation blueprint or a capacity target for another service.

A practical architecture, from sender to viewer

  1. Client connection: A viewer opens a secure WebSocket to a gateway. The gateway authenticates the session, enforces connection and message-size controls, and forwards valid chat commands. Keep socket ownership at the gateway where possible; avoid requiring every gateway to hold global room state.
  2. Ingress and policy: Check identity, channel permissions, rate limits, slow mode, spam rules, and moderation policy before a message is accepted for display. A client should receive a clear rejection or throttling response when a command is blocked; it should not appear as an accepted message to other viewers.
  3. Channel routing: Route accepted messages using a stable key such as channel ID. This provides locality and a natural place to preserve per-channel ordering if the product requires it. Partitioning distributes work across capacity, but a highly active channel can still overload the partition that owns it.
  4. Fanout: Publish the accepted message to the gateways or subscribers that currently serve that channel’s viewers. If one publisher would otherwise write directly to a very large number of sockets, use staged or hierarchical fanout so work is spread across multiple workers and gateway nodes.
  5. Optional persistence: Write to durable storage when the product needs moderation audit, search, replay, or synchronization with a video-on-demand timeline. If storage is asynchronous, define what happens when a live message is displayed but the write fails; live delivery and durable retention are separate guarantees.
  6. Client delivery: Gateways send the message to connected viewers. Include stable message identifiers if consumers or clients need to recognize duplicates, and define whether the interface promises best-effort display, ordered delivery, or a stronger acknowledgement contract.

How to handle a channel that becomes a hot spot

Channel-based routing works well when traffic is reasonably distributed. It does not make an exceptionally popular channel cheap: all its messages and recipient work can still concentrate on a small number of resources. Track skew per channel rather than relying only on fleet-wide averages.

For a hot room, consider splitting distribution into stages: a channel-level publisher sends to fanout workers, which then deliver to subsets of gateway nodes. Another option is dedicated capacity for that room. These approaches add coordination and operational complexity, so use them when measured skew justifies it.

Product controls can complement infrastructure. Slow mode, rate limits, spam filtering, and moderation can reduce the amount of work generated by abuse or bursts. If the product permits sampling or dropping low-priority traffic during overload, state that behavior explicitly; silently losing messages while presenting the system as fully reliable creates confusing user expectations.

Choose delivery and recovery guarantees deliberately

Duplicates and idempotency

At-least-once delivery means a notification may arrive more than once. Twitch’s EventSub documentation says notifications are delivered at least once and may be resent with the same message ID when receipt is uncertain. A consumer using that interface should deduplicate on the stable ID where processing the same event twice would cause an incorrect side effect. This is an integration-specific behavior, not a promise that every chat transport uses the same delivery model.

Disconnects and message gaps

A disconnected socket can leave a viewer without messages sent during the outage. Twitch documents that a dropped EventSub WebSocket session requires subscriptions to be recreated and that notifications missed between disconnect and resubscription are not replayed. A chat product that needs gap recovery must design it: for example, clients can reconnect and request recent messages from a durable history, if that feature and retention policy exist.

Ordering and persistence

Decide whether messages need strict per-channel ordering and where that order is established. A stable channel partition can provide a useful ordering boundary, but it does not automatically guarantee that independently delivered events arrive in order at every client. Likewise, persisting a message does not ensure that it was displayed live, and displaying it live does not prove it was durably stored. Document these as separate outcomes.

What to monitor and what to do under load

Measure each stage, not just the number of open sockets. Useful signals include:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • Active connections and reconnect rate, including bursts after a gateway or network failure.
  • Incoming messages per second, message-size distribution, and recipients per accepted message.
  • Per-channel traffic skew and fanout ratio, so a hot room is visible before it dominates fleet averages.
  • Queue age and depth, moderation latency, end-to-end delivery latency, and storage lag.
  • Dropped, duplicated, rejected, and rate-limited events, with enough context to distinguish policy decisions from infrastructure loss.

Set overload behavior before queues grow without bound. Apply backpressure, shed work according to an explicit policy, or reject new submissions with a clear response. Alert on growing queue age as well as throughput: a system can still be accepting messages while delivery has become too slow to feel live. There is no universal threshold for acceptable latency, queue depth, or server count; establish targets from the product’s needs and validate them under representative load.

Redis, Kafka, managed services, or a custom stack?

There is no evidence here for a universally best broker or a reliable cross-provider performance ranking. Treat Redis Pub/Sub, Kafka, and managed real-time services as candidates to test, not automatic answers. Compare them against the requirements they will actually serve:

  • Peak concurrent connections and incoming messages per second.
  • Recipients per message and how sharply traffic is skewed toward a few channels.
  • Latency targets, ordering needs, and whether replay or retention is required.
  • Delivery and recovery guarantees, regional distribution, and moderation or abuse-control needs.
  • Operational staffing, failure recovery, and total cost at expected traffic.

A managed messaging service can reduce the work of operating gateways or a broker, while a self-operated stack can offer more control over routing and policy. Neither removes the need to model hot channels, test reconnect behavior, and understand delivery semantics. Run load tests with realistic message sizes, channel skew, recipient counts, moderation work, and reconnect storms before committing to a design.

If your chat integrates with Twitch

Twitch’s EventSub documentation describes Webhooks, WebSockets, and Conduits as transports, with transport-agnostic subscriptions subject to event-specific limits. Its lifecycle documentation lists EventSub, EventSub WebSockets, and EventSub Conduits as active; legacy PubSub is deprecated and its permanent shutdown was dated April 14, 2025. Twitch also dated the decommissioning of non-secure WebSocket connections to Twitch IRC servers to August 15, 2025. Check Twitch’s current official documentation before deploying an integration, and use secure transport.

The following are Twitch product limits, not recommended capacity settings for a general-purpose chat system. Twitch’s EventSub WebSocket documentation, accessed October 4, 2026, specifies three enabled connections, up to 300 enabled subscriptions per connection, and a total max_total_cost of 10 for the applicable client ID and user ID token tuple. The documentation says these values are subject to change.

Twitch Conduits distribute notifications among WebSocket or webhook shards. Twitch documents routing through a hashing mechanism based on channel ID and allows the shard count to be scaled up or down. If a notification reaches a disabled shard, Twitch attempts another; if that shard is also disabled, the notification is dropped. The documented maximum is five enabled conduits with up to 20,000 shards per conduit, also subject to change. These are Twitch-specific limits and failure rules, not evidence that channel hashing alone resolves hot partitions in another architecture.

Platform limits apply even if your own infrastructure can handle more traffic. Twitch’s chatbot documentation noted a global limit of 100 concurrent room joins per user account as of May 15, 2024, with exceptions for certain broadcaster, moderator, and authorized bot contexts. Its chat documentation also defines platform-specific join and message-send limits. Verify the rules for the account and bot context you use rather than assuming that adding servers bypasses them.

Build versus buy: make the decision from workload and operations

For a small team, managed real-time infrastructure may be preferable if its connection, fanout, delivery, and recovery behavior fits the product. A self-operated gateway and broker stack is more appropriate when the team needs control that a service cannot provide and can staff the operational burden. Before choosing, specify expected peak traffic, hot-channel behavior, retention needs, acceptable gaps, moderation requirements, and recovery objectives. Then test candidate designs against those requirements; published platform examples do not provide comparable broker benchmarks, vendor pricing, or a universal capacity recipe.
