Tesla’s charging standard in North America is known as NACS (North American Charging System), standardized by SAE as J3400. It defines a compact connector used for both AC and DC charging—but a matching plug alone does not ensure that a particular vehicle can charge at a particular station.
What “Tesla charging standard” means
NACS is Tesla’s name for its North American charging connector and vehicle charge-port design. Tesla announced in November 2022 that it was opening the design to other automakers and charging operators. SAE International subsequently published the system as part of its J3400 standards series. Tesla’s announcement explains the naming and the company’s decision to make the design available.

For general use, “NACS (standardized as SAE J3400)” is the clearest first reference. NACS is the system name; J3400 is SAE’s standards series. SAE, not Tesla alone, publishes the standard documents.

The J3400 documents have different scopes. SAE’s September 2024 recommended practice, J3400_202409, describes general physical, electrical, functional, safety and performance requirements for conductive EV power transfer with a hand-mated coupler. SAE J3400/2 is a related document focused on dimensions: it defines the connector and inlet. SAE’s catalog lists the document as revised May 27, 2025. That revision date applies to J3400/2; it should not be mistaken for the publication date of every document in the J3400 series. SAE J3400/2_202505
What the connector supports—and what it does not tell you
One NACS coupler design can transfer both AC and DC power. That does not mean every NACS vehicle or charging station supports both types, or that they charge at the same rate. The connector standard describes an interface; the vehicle’s onboard equipment, the charger’s capabilities and the electrical supply determine what a particular session can do.

Do not infer charging speed from the connector name. Check the vehicle and charger specifications for AC or DC capability and the charging limits that apply to the particular model and station.
Why a matching plug may still fail
A connector can fit physically while the vehicle and charger fail to establish the communications needed to start charging. Adapters also differ in what they do. A passive adapter electrically connects pins but does not change signals. An active adapter contains electronics that can alter or translate signals between charging communication interfaces. A passive adapter can work only when the vehicle and charger already support compatible communications; an adapter’s physical fit is not proof of that support.
- Identify the vehicle’s inlet and the station’s connector.
- Confirm that the vehicle and charging equipment support compatible communications for that combination.
- Check whether an adapter is required, approved for the vehicle, and rated for the intended use.
- Verify that the specific vehicle model and charging location are supported by the network.
Charging-network access is a separate question
Having a NACS inlet does not automatically grant access to every charging network. Tesla says access to its Supercharger network is expanding to vehicles from other automakers and describes adapter-based access for some makes. The participating makes and access arrangements can change; the page does not establish compatibility for every model year, trim, station or adapter. Choosing a home charger
For home use, treat the connector as one part of the equipment decision. Confirm that the charger suits the vehicle’s inlet and charging capability, and have the home electrical installation assessed against current equipment and installation requirements. Which NACS claims are historical?
Tesla’s November 2022 announcement said its connector had been used for 20 billion EV charging miles, that NACS vehicles outnumbered CCS vehicles two-to-one, and that there were 60% more NACS posts than all CCS-equipped networks combined. The practical takeaway is to check compatibility for the exact vehicle, charger, adapter and network rather than relying on a connector label alone.
