Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Company Limited (TSMC) is a semiconductor foundry: it manufactures chips from designs supplied by other companies. It is not a consumer chip brand, and it does not sell every finished device that contains a chip made in its factories.
What does TSMC do?
TSMC fabricates semiconductors on silicon wafers according to customers’ integrated-circuit designs. A company that designs chips but outsources their production is often called fabless; the foundry provides the manufacturing capability. TSMC pioneered this “pure-play foundry” model, focusing on making products for customers rather than designing and marketing semiconductor products under its own name, as described in its 2025 Annual Report.

The distinction matters: TSMC makes chips used in products sold by other companies, but that does not mean it owns or sells those products. TSMC says the foundry model helped the global fabless industry grow. Its mission, as stated in the 2025 Annual Report, is “to be the trusted technology and capacity provider for the global logic IC industry for years to come.” That is the company’s stated mission, not an independent assessment.

What services and technologies does TSMC provide?
Manufacturing is the central business, but TSMC’s work spans more than wafer fabrication. Its Form 20-F describes processes for CMOS logic, mixed-signal, radio-frequency, embedded memory and BiCMOS products, alongside design services, mask-making, advanced packaging and testing. The company’s services page also describes TSMC 3DFabric silicon stacking and packaging, eFoundry web applications and CyberShuttle prototyping.
#1 Best Overall
These are business-to-business services for semiconductor customers, not consumer products. Process-node figures describe manufacturing technology generations; they do not mean that every chip made by TSMC uses the newest process. TSMC’s 2025 Form 20-F says its 2-nanometer technology entered volume production in 2025. The same filing described 16-angstrom technology as expected to enter risk production in 2026; that was a company forecast, not confirmation that the milestone occurred.
How large is TSMC?
TSMC’s 2025 company-reported figures show the scale of its manufacturing business. The figures below refer to 2025 unless otherwise noted.
Rank #2
| Measure | TSMC-reported figure |
|---|---|
| Products and process technologies | 12,682 different products made using 305 distinct technologies |
| Customers | 534 |
| Annual capacity | More than 17 million 12-inch-equivalent wafers |
| Wafer revenue from advanced manufacturing processes | 74%; TSMC defines advanced processes here as geometries of 7 nm and smaller |
These are company figures reported in its 2025 Annual Report and company profile. Capacity is expressed in 12-inch-equivalent wafers, a standardized measure, rather than a count of finished chips; chips vary in size and yield.
Where does TSMC manufacture chips?
TSMC’s reported 2025 manufacturing footprint included Taiwan, China, the United States and Japan. A specialty fab was under construction in Dresden, Germany. Its customer support, account-management and engineering offices also serve customers in North America, Europe, Japan, China and South Korea, according to the company profile.
The corporate structure differs by location. TSMC Arizona and TSMC Nanjing are wholly owned subsidiaries; Japan Advanced Semiconductor Manufacturing (JASM) is majority-owned. TSMC’s 2025 Annual Report says its first Arizona facility began volume production using 4 nm technology in the fourth quarter of 2024, and construction of a third Arizona facility began in 2025. Completed production and construction milestones are distinct from the company’s further investment plans.

TSMC estimated that the worldwide semiconductor market excluding memory reached US$611 billion in 2025, up 19% from 2024. It also estimated a US$305 billion “Foundry 2.0” sector, up 16% from 2024. Foundry 2.0 is TSMC’s own market definition: it includes semiconductor manufacturing as well as packaging, testing, mask-making and related technologies, and integrated device manufacturers excluding memory. These are company estimates, not a universal industry classification; the annual report explains the measure in its market overview.
What is TSMC’s official name and stock symbol?
The legal name is Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Company Limited, commonly shortened to TSMC. Its common shares trade on the Taiwan Stock Exchange under ticker 2330; its American Depositary Shares trade on the New York Stock Exchange under ticker T. The company profile and its 2025 Form 20-F filing announcement provide the company and listing details.
