An AI language model is a machine-learning model designed to process language input and produce language output. It learns patterns from language data and uses those patterns, along with the input it receives, to generate text or other language responses. That definition describes the model itself—not necessarily the complete app or service a person uses.
What does “AI language model” mean?
A language model is an AI model whose task is language. It takes language as input and produces language as output, such as a continuation, response, summary, or other text. Eurostat’s 2024 introduction describes large language models as trained on large volumes of text and designed to understand and generate human-like text from received input. This is a practical description of large language models, not a universal formal definition covering every language model. Eurostat’s AI glossary

The broader term “AI model” covers computational, statistical, or machine-learning techniques that produce outputs from inputs. A language model is one specialized kind of AI model, focused on language rather than every possible task. NIST’s AI model glossary
How does an AI language model work?
At a high level, the model learns patterns from language data. When given new language input, it uses what it learned and the current input to produce a language output. The exact architecture and training objective can vary; the term “language model” alone does not identify one particular design.

For example, a user might enter a question and receive a written response. The model generates language in response to that input, but the definition does not imply that it independently checked the response against reliable sources.
How is a model different from an AI system?
The model is the learned component that maps inputs to outputs. A deployed AI system can include more than that model: for example, a user interface, connected data sources, safeguards, or other components. NIST’s AI definitions address broader systems, while Eurostat’s description focuses on language models. NIST AI Risk Management Framework
So, when someone refers to an AI assistant or chatbot, they may mean a complete service built around one or more models—not just the language model itself. And not every language model is a chatbot: a model can process or generate language without being presented as a conversational product.
Does an AI language model always give correct answers?
No. Fluent or confident-sounding output is not proof that the content is accurate. The OECD identifies factual inaccuracy, hallucinations, inconsistency, and difficulty understanding new contexts among the limitations of AI language models. OECD, Initial policy considerations for generative artificial intelligence
For important decisions, treat generated language as information to assess rather than as verified fact. NIST’s generative-AI evaluation work emphasizes assessing both capabilities and limitations across modalities, including text, images, code, audio, and video. NIST Generative AI
Quick Recap

In short: the definition
- An AI language model is a machine-learning model focused on processing and producing language.
- It generates output using patterns learned from data and the input it receives.
- It is narrower than the general category of AI models and is only one possible component of a complete AI system.
- Its output may be inaccurate or inconsistent, so natural-sounding language should not be treated as automatic verification.
