In common usage, it often refers to persistent memory: non-volatile media that can provide low-latency, byte-addressable access. SCM is a category, not one universal technology or interface—and a device’s ability to retain data does not mean every system mode or application uses it persistently.
What does storage-class memory mean?
Storage-class memory describes memory or storage intended to sit between DRAM and conventional storage in a system’s hierarchy. The term is often used for persistent memory, which combines data retention through power cycles with memory-like access. The Storage Networking Industry Association (SNIA) describes persistent memory as non-volatile, byte-addressable, and low latency.

Those characteristics explain the concept, but they do not define a single product. Technologies grouped under SCM can differ in how they connect to a computer, how software accesses them, and what performance they deliver. “Low latency” is not a promise of DRAM-equivalent speed; results depend on the medium, platform, access pattern, and software.

How is SCM different from DRAM and an SSD?
The useful distinction is not simply that SCM is “in between.” It is how each tier retains data and how the system accesses it. The comparison below describes broad architectural distinctions, not a benchmark ranking for every device.

| Characteristic | DRAM | Persistent memory / common SCM usage | Conventional SSD or block storage |
|---|---|---|---|
| Retains data without power | No | Yes when configured for persistent operation | Yes |
| Typical access model | Memory load/store, byte-addressable | May be byte-addressable and directly mapped to applications | Block input/output (I/O) |
| Place in the hierarchy | Traditional low-latency working memory | Intended as a lower-latency tier than storage; actual results vary | Storage tier, generally accessed at a coarser block level |
| Typical role | Fast working memory | Additional capacity and a possible persistent, memory-addressable tier | Higher-capacity persistent storage |
| Software considerations | Standard memory support | Persistent-memory-aware operating system, filesystem, libraries, or application path may matter | Storage stack and block interfaces |
Byte-addressability means software can work with data at memory-sized locations rather than requesting whole storage blocks. Block storage, as used by conventional SSDs, presents data through block I/O. This distinction can let supported software access persistent data structures in place, but hardware capability alone does not guarantee that a particular application uses persistent semantics. SNIA’s overview of persistent memory discusses its properties and application areas.
What is persistent memory, and is it the same as SCM?
Persistent memory is a technology description: memory-oriented access combined with retention of data without power. SCM is a broader category label often applied to persistent-memory hardware, but the terms are not exact synonyms in every context. Neither term should be used interchangeably with “Optane” or “SSD.”
Intel’s Optane DC Persistent Memory is one historical product example. Intel described it as a type of persistent memory sometimes called storage-class memory in an overview featuring Intel presenter Eduardo Berrocal. Optane SSDs, by contrast, are block-storage products; they do not have the same access model as Optane Persistent Memory.

Why operating mode matters: the Optane example
A persistent-memory device’s capabilities and the way a system configures it are separate questions. Intel Optane Persistent Memory illustrates why: Intel documents two operating modes with different behavior.
Memory Mode
In Memory Mode, Optane Persistent Memory provides capacity as volatile system memory, with DRAM acting as a cache. Although the hardware can support persistence in another configuration, data in Memory Mode is not persistent from the system’s point of view. Intel explains this distinction in its support article, “Why Is the Intel Optane Persistent Memory in Memory Mode Not Persistent?”
App Direct Mode
In App Direct Mode, DRAM and persistent memory are separate resources. Persistent memory can be byte-addressable and mapped into the system’s physical address space for direct application access. The application and software stack must still use an appropriate persistent-memory pathway; selecting hardware with persistent capabilities does not automatically make every workload persistent.

What software support is needed?
Persistent access depends on the path between the hardware, operating system, filesystem, libraries, and application. SNIA’s NVM Programming Model describes recommended behavior among user-space and operating-system kernel components that support non-volatile memory (NVM); it is not a single API that every system automatically uses.
Techniques include memory-mapped files and direct access (DAX). Intel’s Persistent Memory FAQ discusses these approaches, and its programming introduction explains the idea of accessing persistent data structures in place. Intel describes DAX as bypassing an extra page-cache copy for supported devices and filesystems. That is a software pathway, not an automatic property of everything marketed as SCM.
Attachment models can also differ. Persistent memory need not always be attached directly to a CPU in the same way as a DIMM; SNIA identifies Compute Express Link (CXL) as an emerging attachment model while maintaining the relevance of its NVM Programming Model.

What is storage-class memory used for?
SNIA identifies databases, storage, virtualization, big data, cloud and Internet of Things (IoT) systems, and artificial intelligence (AI) among persistent memory’s application areas. These are workload categories where a persistent, memory-addressable tier may be useful—not evidence that every application in them will become faster.
Whether SCM fits a particular system depends on several factors:
The Tool Desk
Outbyte PC Repair FREERepair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Outbyte Driver Updater FREEFix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →- Persistence needs: Does the workload benefit from retaining data structures through a power cycle?
- Access granularity: Can the application use byte-addressable access, or does it work through block I/O?
- Observed latency: How does the specific platform perform with the real workload and access pattern?
- Capacity and cost: Does the tier provide a useful capacity/performance balance for the system?
- Software changes: Can the operating system, filesystem, libraries, and application use the intended persistent-memory path?
- Platform support: Are the hardware and software combination supported together?
The broad SCM category has no single current price or benchmark that can settle these questions across all devices and implementations.

Is Intel Optane Persistent Memory still available?
Intel’s support documentation lists Optane Persistent Memory 100 Series modules in 128GB, 256GB, and 512GB capacities and identifies both the 100 and 200 Series as discontinued. These are documented product specifications, not a statement that modules are currently in stock or compatible with any particular server. Intel’s Optane Persistent Memory documentation resources cover the product family.
Microsoft also uses “storage-class memory” or “SCM” when discussing persistent memory. Its deployment guidance covers named Windows Server releases and Azure Local; it is not proof of universal Windows or hardware support. Verify the exact server, operating-system release, and configuration before treating legacy modules as deployable. They are specialized server hardware, not interchangeable with ordinary consumer RAM DIMMs.
How to interpret the term when comparing technologies
When a product or system is described as SCM, look beyond the label and establish what it actually provides. Check the media’s persistence behavior in the configured mode, whether access is byte-addressable or block-based, what software path the application uses, and what platform support is required. If the term refers to a specific product such as Intel Optane Persistent Memory, distinguish that product from Optane SSDs and verify its current availability and compatibility rather than assuming the category label guarantees either.
