Financial-reasoning benchmarks show that performance can fall sharply when a task moves from one formula to several, while spreadsheet work adds challenges in reading data and formulas. The title’s claim about a first answer being wrong cannot be verified without the original prompt, inputs, answer, and correction, so the evidence here is about what LLMs can and cannot reliably do—not a reconstruction of that personal test.
What financial benchmarks say about LLM arithmetic
FinMathBench, published in the 2026 AAAI proceedings, contains 946 questions across four complexity levels, according to its authors. In the paper’s reported chain-of-thought setup, GPT-4o scored 72.9% on one-formula questions and 14.0% on four-formula questions. These results describe that model, benchmark, and setup; they are not an error rate for startup forecasts or a prediction for every model.

The FinMathBench authors identify several failure modes: weak direct calculation, a tendency to favor frequently solved formula variables, and rejecting valid but extreme financial values as if they must be mistakes. That last behavior matters in startup planning: an unusual input may deserve scrutiny, but a model’s instinctive “sanity check” does not establish that the input is invalid.

A startup spreadsheet requires more than arithmetic. The model must find the right cells, interpret their labels and layout, understand how formulas connect, and then calculate correctly. FinSheet-Bench, a March 2026 preprint using synthetic financial spreadsheets modeled on private-equity fund structures, reports that no evaluated standalone model had an error rate low enough for unsupervised professional finance use. It also finds that performance varies with spreadsheet complexity and layout. The study is not a direct test of startup forecasts.

FinSheet-Bench’s authors conclude that “Reliable financial spreadsheet extraction will likely require architectural approaches that separate document understanding from deterministic computation.” This is their conclusion from a study using synthetic financial portfolio data, not evidence that a particular startup workbook was tested.
Benchmark scores are not a verdict on your forecast
FinanceReasoning, published in the 2025 ACL proceedings, reports 89.1% accuracy for its best-performing configuration and notes continuing numerical-precision challenges. Its tasks and evaluation differ from FinMathBench and FinSheet-Bench, so these scores should not be treated as a head-to-head ranking or combined into a single estimate of how often startup math is wrong.
Benchmarks answer bounded questions about performance on specific tasks under stated conditions. They do not establish whether your pricing, churn, conversion, hiring plan, or growth assumption is plausible. Nor does accurate arithmetic turn a speculative business assumption into a reliable forecast.
Audit startup math in a way you can check
A startup model commonly links assumptions to revenue, expenses, cash flow, runway, unit economics, and scenarios. A SaaS template from a publisher illustrates those components, but it is an example of model structure—not independent proof that any template is correct or that its investor claims apply universally.

- Enough forms for 1 year for churches of approximately 150 members
- 5 3/16" x 9"
- Includes forms for church receipts, member contributions, and disbursements
- Label every input and unit. Mark dollars, percentages, customer counts, and time periods. Make clear whether a figure is monthly or annual.
- Write out the formula path. Show how each result follows from the inputs, including intermediate values when several formulas are chained together. This makes it easier to locate a bad input, an incorrect formula, or a calculation slip.
- Separate arithmetic from assumptions. Check whether a formula was applied correctly, then separately ask whether its inputs are supported by business evidence. A model can calculate an unrealistic forecast perfectly.
- Recalculate independently. Use a deterministic calculator for simple arithmetic. For a workbook, inspect the formulas and references rather than relying only on a written summary of the sheet.
- Test sensitivity. Change an assumption and check whether the output moves in the expected direction. A single projection is not certainty; the point is to see which assumptions drive the result.
- Keep the test reproducible. Record the exact model and configuration, prompt, input data, tool access, output, and scoring method. Preserve the original answer and any corrected version.
SpreadsheetBench’s V2 benchmark covers business spreadsheet workflows including financial modeling, debugging, and visualization. Its submission instructions request inference logs, output files, and results from unmodified official evaluation code—useful principles for making an independent model test inspectable, even though they do not validate a startup forecast by themselves.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. What a personal “first answer was wrong” test needs to show
To substantiate a personal experiment, publish the exact startup-math prompt and inputs, the model and configuration, its first answer, the corrected answer, and how the correction was checked. Without that record, readers cannot tell whether the error came from arithmetic, a misunderstood unit, a spreadsheet-reading mistake, or a changed assumption. The headline’s personal claim is therefore not independently established by the available benchmark evidence.
