It is not currently available to download or play: Roberts Space Industries (RSI) said on February 4, 2026, that the game remains in development. A pledge containing Squadron 42 is tied to future access after development, testing, and release—not immediate play.
What is Squadron 42?
RSI describes Squadron 42 as Star Citizen’s single-player campaign. It is distinct from Star Citizen’s online game packages, which generally bundle access to the online game with a ship and other items. RSI’s onboarding checklist identifies Squadron 42 as a separate campaign and notes that it remains in development.

The official information cited here does not establish the campaign’s current plot, mission structure, or final feature set. It is therefore more accurate to describe what the campaign is and its release status than to treat older promotional descriptions as a confirmed account of the finished game.
Is Squadron 42 out yet?
No. In a support article updated February 4, 2026, RSI said Squadron 42 was in development and not available for download. RSI’s April 16, 2026 onboarding checklist also described it as still in development and unavailable. Do not expect to download or play the campaign now.

RSI says that accounts owning a pledge containing Squadron 42 will be able to download and play it once development is complete, the game has been tested, and it has been released. That is a future access condition, not a release date or a promise of immediate access. RSI’s support article, “Where can I download Squadron 42?”, provides the current availability guidance cited here.
Do you need Star Citizen to play Squadron 42?
RSI presents Squadron 42 as a single-player campaign separate from Star Citizen’s online game. Its onboarding checklist distinguishes the standalone Squadron 42 pledge from other packages, which include Star Citizen, at least one ship, and additional items. This indicates that the campaign is not simply the online game’s single-player mode.
