What Is Simulcasting? How to Stream to YouTube and Other Platforms

Simulcasting sends the same live program to multiple platforms at once. Learn how direct encoder output and cloud relays differ, then set up YouTube and troubleshoot the stream.
Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Simulcasting, also called multistreaming, means broadcasting the same live program to multiple platforms at the same time. You can send a separate output from your computer to each platform, or send one feed to a cloud relay that forwards it to your chosen destinations. The right setup depends on your computer, upload capacity, number of platforms and the control you want over each stream.

How simulcasting works

Every live broadcast starts with an audio-video feed encoded by software or hardware. For simulcasting, that feed must reach each destination. YouTube describes both local software or hardware encoding and cloud-service encoding as ways to stream across platforms. YouTube says you can go live with the same content across multiple platforms at the same time.

Send a separate output from your computer

Your encoder sends a feed to each platform directly. This gives you direct control over the outputs, but your computer and internet connection must handle the encoding and delivery workload. Sending to several platforms can increase the upload capacity required.

Send one feed through a cloud relay

Your encoder sends one feed to a relay, which distributes it to the destinations you configure. This can simplify local setup and reduce the number of separate outputs your computer must send. Relay services vary, so confirm their current platform support, terms and plan limits before depending on one. Cloudflare documents simulcast outputs that can be enabled or disabled, while Restream describes multistreaming with OBS through its service.

Choose direct streaming or a relay

There is no universally better method. YouTube recommends a local encoder when you have a capable computer and want maximum quality and control; it points to a cloud service for simpler setup, a lighter local workload or streaming to more than two channels. These are selection cues, not performance guarantees for every computer or service. Compare the trade-offs before choosing:

Factor Direct from your encoder Cloud relay
Feed path Your setup sends outputs to each destination. Your setup sends one feed to the relay, which distributes it.
Local workload Your computer and connection handle encoding and delivery to destinations. The relay handles onward distribution; your setup still has to encode and deliver its incoming feed.
Control Direct control over each output from your encoder. Destination and output controls depend on the relay.
Upload capacity Plan for the demands of the chosen settings and delivery method; multiple direct outputs can require more capacity. Plan for the incoming feed to the relay, and check its current requirements.
Costs and limits Depends on your equipment and connection; no service price is established here. May involve a subscription; destination counts, features and availability vary by service and plan.

Whichever route you use, test audio, video and ingest at every destination. Each platform may have its own account-standing requirements, stream URL and key, policies and limits. YouTube advises checking the other platforms’ help documentation rather than assuming their rules match its own. See YouTube’s guidance on streaming across platforms.

Set up a YouTube stream for simulcasting

Use YouTube Studio to create or schedule the event and connect your encoder. Other destinations have their own setup and policy requirements, so confirm those directly with each platform.

  1. Enable live streaming early. Your YouTube channel must be verified and live streaming enabled. First-time enablement may take up to 24 hours, so do not leave it until just before your planned broadcast. YouTube’s encoder instructions cover eligibility and setup.
  2. Create or schedule the YouTube event. In YouTube Studio, create or schedule the live stream and locate its server URL and stream key.
  3. Protect the stream key. Treat it as a credential: keep it private and enter it only in the encoder or relay you intend to use. Use the key associated with the intended event.
  4. Select the distribution method. For direct multistreaming, configure the encoder to send to each destination. For a relay, connect the encoder to the relay and configure or authorize the destinations there.
  5. Set encoder options and test. Choose a resolution, frame rate and bitrate suitable for your content and connection, then check audio and video in the YouTube preview and at every other destination. The correct settings depend on the stream and delivery method; there is no single bitrate or upload-speed figure that applies to every setup. YouTube publishes encoder settings, bitrates and resolutions.
  6. Start the event in YouTube when required. For a scheduled stream, wait for the preview to appear in Live Control Room, then select Go live if YouTube prompts you to do so.
  7. Check each destination separately. Confirm successful ingest, title and privacy settings, and any platform-specific restrictions before relying on the broadcast being live everywhere.
  8. End the broadcast cleanly. Stop the stream from the encoder or platform controls as appropriate. YouTube automatically archives streams under 12 hours.

Encoder settings and connection capacity

Resolution, frame rate and bitrate affect the data your encoder sends and the quality of the incoming feed. YouTube transcodes live video for viewers on different devices and networks, but that does not remove the need to select suitable encoder settings. A direct multi-output setup and a relay setup may put different demands on your local upload connection, so check the requirements for your settings and every destination instead of treating one bitrate as universal.

  • Choose resolution and frame rate based on your content, equipment and available upload capacity.
  • Use the bitrate guidance published by YouTube and check any different requirements from the other platforms or relay.
  • Leave enough upload headroom for a stable stream; a connection that barely matches a target bitrate may not be dependable.
  • Test the complete route, including audio, the YouTube preview and each other destination. A successful YouTube preview alone does not confirm that every platform is receiving the stream.

Consult YouTube’s current encoder settings guidance and the documentation for each destination before going live.

Copyright, platform rules and repeat programming

Simulcasting is a distribution method, not permission to use any content on every destination. You are responsible for ensuring that the video, music and other material you broadcast can be used on each platform, and for checking each platform’s current rules. YouTube specifically advises creators to consult other platforms’ help documentation because requirements may differ. A stream accepted by one destination is not evidence that another destination will accept it.

What YouTube means by “broadcast” and “stream”

For creators using YouTube’s Live Streaming API, a broadcast is the event viewers watch, while a stream is the incoming audio-video feed and its settings. The API allows one stream to be bound to up to three broadcasts, and each broadcast binds to exactly one stream. This is an API resource relationship, not a general limit on how many external platforms you can simulcast to. See Google’s explanation of broadcasts and streams.

Troubleshoot common simulcasting problems

YouTube will not let you go live

Confirm the channel is verified and live streaming is enabled. If this is your first time enabling it, activation may take up to 24 hours. Check YouTube Studio for any account or event notices before troubleshooting the encoder.

The encoder connects, but the event does not appear live

Check that you used the intended event’s server URL and stream key. For a scheduled stream, wait for the preview in Live Control Room and select Go live if required. Keep the stream key private; if you suspect it has been exposed, replace it through YouTube’s available controls and update the encoder or relay.

YouTube works, but another destination does not

Check that destination’s account eligibility, stream URL and key, title and privacy settings, current policy restrictions, and ingest status. Do not assume settings or rules are shared across platforms; use that platform’s own support documentation.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The stream is unstable or drops frames

Review the encoder’s bitrate, resolution and frame rate against YouTube’s settings guidance and the capacity of your connection. If sending direct outputs, account for the delivery demands of each destination. If using a relay, check its required incoming settings and status. Reduce settings or simplify the route if your available upload capacity cannot sustain the chosen configuration.

Audio or video is missing or wrong

Check the encoder’s selected audio and video sources, then inspect the preview and each destination independently. Test the complete setup before the event; a working input does not by itself prove that every destination is receiving the correct feed.

Or let it run in the cloud

If your goal is to keep uploaded videos playing live on YouTube around the clock, rather than simulcast a camera-led live show to several platforms, StreamNeo is built for that YouTube-only workflow:

  1. Upload a recording or build a playlist.
  2. Add your YouTube stream key once.
  3. Go live; StreamNeo loops the content from the cloud.

Nothing has to stay on at home. Uploads stream as made, up to 4K at 60 fps, at one flat price per slot. If YouTube drops the stream, StreamNeo automatically recovers. The first day is free with no card required. The monthly option is $9.99 per month. Start your free day with StreamNeo.
