Outbyte Driver Updater FREEFix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Outbyte PC Repair FREERepair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →If your upload speed falls during a livestream, lower your encoder’s video bitrate until it fits the connection you have now. If that is not enough, reduce resolution or frame rate. In OBS, dynamic bitrate can help keep the stream connected during congestion, but it lowers picture quality and does not repair the connection. Then check for competing uploads, Wi-Fi or equipment problems, and an unstable route to the streaming platform.
First, confirm that the problem is on your side of the stream
In OBS, check the dropped-frame indicator and the platform’s stream-health messages. OBS says dropped frames mean the connection to the remote ingest server is unstable or cannot keep up with the configured bitrate; enough drops can disconnect the stream. OBS Project’s connection troubleshooting guide explains the indicator and next steps.
If OBS shows no network-related dropped frames but viewers report buffering, the issue may be their connection, location, or playback device rather than your outgoing stream. OBS’s buffering guide distinguishes viewer playback problems from broadcaster-side drops. A lower stream bitrate may still help viewers on slower connections, particularly if the platform does not make transcoded quality options available to them.
Lower bitrate before making bigger changes
In OBS, open Settings > Output and lower the video bitrate used for streaming. Choose a value the connection can sustain reliably, not merely one that matches a brief peak on a speed test. Leave room for normal fluctuation and other traffic on the network.

OBS Project’s 2024 troubleshooting guide suggests setting bitrate to 75% of total upload speed as a starting heuristic. It is not a stability guarantee: a fluctuating connection, household uploads, and network overhead can leave less usable capacity. Platform guidance can use different margins; Twitch’s FAQ search-result summary describes upload capacity of roughly bitrate plus 30%, but its page’s current details could not be verified, so treat that as an illustration rather than a universal rule. The practical test is whether the stream sustains the chosen setting under representative conditions.
Reducing bitrate trades image detail for a more reliable send. If the picture becomes too soft at your current resolution, reduce resolution or frame rate as well; this can make a lower bitrate look better than forcing the same bitrate to encode a larger or faster-moving picture.

Match the setting to the platform and content
Use the target platform’s current encoder recommendations rather than assuming one bitrate table applies everywhere. YouTube Help’s live encoder settings vary by codec, resolution, and frame rate. For example, it lists 720p at 30 or 60 fps as 2 Mbps minimum and 6 Mbps recommended with AV1/H.265, versus 3 Mbps minimum and 8 Mbps recommended with H.264. For 1080p at 60 fps, its figures are 4 Mbps minimum and 12 Mbps recommended with AV1/H.265, versus 6 Mbps minimum and 17 Mbps recommended with H.264. These are YouTube ingestion settings, not required upload-speed thresholds or universal recommendations for other services.
Test with the same resolution, frame rate, codec, and representative motion and audio you expect to use live. YouTube advises testing before going live and monitoring stream health during the event. A speed test is useful context, but it cannot by itself show whether the route to the ingest server will remain stable. YouTube also notes that 2160p/4K does not offer its low-latency option, so highest resolution and lowest latency are not always available together.

Use OBS dynamic bitrate only as a fallback
When the connection repeatedly falls below your configured bitrate, OBS offers Settings > Advanced > Network > Dynamically change bitrate to manage congestion (Beta). It lowers bitrate when OBS detects the connection cannot keep up, which may prevent network-related dropped frames from ending the stream.
This is a continuity measure, not a fix. OBS warns that dynamic adjustment does not solve the underlying connection problem and reduces video quality when it lowers bitrate. If enabled, still investigate the cause and use a deliberately sustainable output setting when conditions improve.

Find what is consuming or disrupting upload capacity
Make one change at a time where practical, then observe whether dropped frames stop. That makes it easier to identify the cause instead of changing several variables without learning which mattered.
- Pause competing traffic: Stop cloud backups, file uploads, and other devices’ upload-heavy activity, then test again. The connection’s total upload capacity is shared.
- Try another ingest server: If your platform lets you select one, test a different server. If only one server or service path is affected, that comparison can help isolate a routing issue; it does not repair the problematic route.
- Test Ethernet instead of Wi-Fi: OBS recommends wired networking because Wi-Fi can be unstable for streaming. If you are on Wi-Fi, first test with a suitable Ethernet cable before buying new equipment.
- Check software and network management: Temporarily investigate VPNs, security software, or network-prioritization utilities that may affect the stream. Also check whether network drivers are outdated.
- Check the physical path: Inspect cables and connections, then restart the modem and router if appropriate. Do not replace equipment without evidence of a fault; OBS recommends asking the ISP if you are unsure.
When to contact your internet provider
If a lower bitrate, wired connection, paused competing uploads, alternate ingest server, and local checks do not resolve the drops, contact your ISP. Give them the times the problem occurs, whether it affects one server or service, the bitrate you tested, and the steps you have already tried. The cause may be provider-side changes or congestion along the route, which you cannot correct in OBS.
