Shader compilation stutter is a brief hitch caused when a game has to compile a shader or create a graphics pipeline state at the moment it needs to draw with it. Instead of having that work ready beforehand, the game and graphics driver pause or delay frame delivery while they prepare it. It is most likely to show up the first time a particular effect or scene configuration appears, but a hitch alone does not prove shader compilation is the cause.
What is shader compilation stutter?
A game uses shaders to describe how the graphics hardware should render things such as materials, lighting, and visual effects. The engine and graphics driver also need a pipeline state object (PSO): a bundle of settings that determines how a particular kind of rendering work is performed.

If the required shader or PSO has not been prepared yet, the game may have to compile or create it just before drawing. That wait can interrupt smooth frame delivery, appearing as a sudden pause or hitch. Epic Games’ Unreal Engine engineers describe the problem as a renderer discovering that it needs a new shader immediately before drawing and waiting for the driver to compile it: Epic’s explanation of shader compilation stuttering.

Why does it happen during gameplay?
Games need many shader and pipeline combinations
A game’s rendering needs vary with its materials, effects, objects, and graphics settings. The engine and driver must prepare code and state for the relevant graphics API and GPU. As Epic explains, shader code may be translated through API-specific intermediate formats such as DXBC for Direct3D 11, DXIL for Direct3D 12, or SPIR-V for Vulkan; the final executable code is also vendor-specific and can vary across hardware generations. That makes a single universally reusable precompiled binary impractical.

Consequently, a game may encounter a combination that has not yet been prepared on a particular system. If it requests that work during a frame rather than ahead of time, the player can experience a hitch.
Preparation can happen too late
Compiling shaders or creating PSOs is not inherently an in-game problem. A game can do much of this work during loading or another preparation period, before the relevant scene is drawn. But if the work is still outstanding when gameplay requires a PSO, the frame may wait. Epic notes that even compilation started during launch can cause a hitch if the pipeline is needed immediately.
Caches help on later encounters, but can be reset
Graphics drivers can save compiled PSOs to disk so a later session can reuse them. An empty or cleared cache means some work may need to be prepared again; Epic notes that installing a new driver can clear the cache. As a title-specific illustration, Epic says Fortnite may take around 20–30 seconds longer to load into a Battle Royale match when the driver cache is empty. That figure describes Epic’s example for Fortnite, not a typical or guaranteed delay for other games.

A pattern consistent with shader compilation is a hitch the first time a particular visual effect, material, or scene configuration appears, followed by fewer or shorter hitches when the same content is encountered again. A driver update or cache reset can make previously prepared work necessary again.

These clues are not conclusive. Other gameplay problems can cause hitches, and Epic cautions that PSO compilation is only one possible cause. Confirming it requires suitable game-engine instrumentation rather than judging by appearance alone.
What can game developers do to reduce it?
Compile and cache likely PSOs before they are needed
Unreal Engine’s approach is PSO caching and precaching: collect or infer the rendering states a game is likely to use, prepare their pipelines before gameplay needs them, and cache the results for reuse. This shifts work away from the moment of drawing and can reduce first-use stalls. How effective it is depends on whether the game anticipates the combinations players actually encounter, as well as when preparation finishes.
Check for missed and late pipeline preparation
Preloading every possible combination is not guaranteed, so developers need to find gaps. Unreal Engine’s PSO validation can classify pipeline states as missed, untracked, hit, too late, used, or precached. A missed PSO was needed but was not precached as expected; a too-late entry indicates that a precache request had not finished before the pipeline was required. Epic recommends examining logs and Unreal Insights to investigate misses and late requests. See Unreal Engine’s PSO optimization and validation guidance.
Unreal Engine 5.8 documentation, accessed October 4, 2026, uses 20 milliseconds as the default threshold for flagging runtime PSO creation as a hitch. The threshold is configurable and is a diagnostic setting—not a statement that every shader-related hitch lasts 20 milliseconds or that 20 milliseconds is a universal boundary for what players perceive as a hitch.

Balance fewer runtime stalls against preparation costs
Precompiling and retaining more PSOs can reduce the work left for gameplay, but coverage and timing matter: a pipeline that was not anticipated, or one that finishes too late, can still stall on first use. Keeping compiled PSOs in memory also has a memory cost, while doing more preparation earlier can shift work into loading. These are trade-offs developers must manage rather than guarantees that precaching will eliminate every hitch.

There is no universal cache-clearing or hardware-upgrade fix established for shader compilation stutter. If a game has a repeatable first-use hitch, check its official support guidance and follow instructions for that title and graphics mode. Cache-clearing advice may apply to a specific diagnosed issue, but it can also mean shaders need to be prepared again afterward.
For example, Epic’s Fortnite support guidance for stuttering addresses a described case of repeated DirectX shader recompilation causing heavy stuttering in DirectX 12 mode. It says clearing the shader cache may help with that issue and warns that the first match may still stutter while the client compiles new shaders. This is Fortnite-specific guidance, not a guaranteed remedy for every game or every hitch.

A GPU, CPU, SSD, or cooling upgrade is not established as a reliable general fix for work the game has failed to prepare before use. If stuttering persists or does not follow a first-use pattern, consult the game’s support resources rather than assuming shader compilation is responsible.
