How Wetlands Help Manage Stormwater Around Data Centers

Engineered stormwater wetlands can retain runoff and help treat pollutants, but they are distinct from natural wetlands and depend on site conditions and maintenance.

Engineered stormwater wetlands can slow runoff from a data-center site, retain water for gradual release and help remove some pollutants. They are not the same as natural wetlands: routing extra runoff into an existing wetland can alter its hydrology and harm it. Whether a constructed wetland suits a particular project depends on site conditions, climate, land, maintenance capacity and local requirements.

How a stormwater wetland works

A constructed stormwater wetland is an engineered post-construction control. Shallow water and vegetation slow runoff moving through it. That slower flow gives suspended sediment time to settle, while plants and related biological processes can take up or transform some pollutants. Retaining water also delays some runoff from reaching downstream waters.

The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) identifies nutrients, biochemical oxygen demand, suspended solids, metals and pathogens among the pollutant types wetland functions can address. The extent of treatment depends on the design and site; these general mechanisms do not guarantee a particular result for any facility. See the EPA Stormwater Wetland fact sheet and its wetlands and stormwater management guidance.

Constructed wetland or natural wetland?

The distinction matters. A constructed stormwater wetland is designed as a control to receive and treat runoff. An existing natural wetland is an ecological system with its own water patterns. EPA cautions against diverting stormwater into a natural wetland when doing so changes its hydrology; added or altered flows can degrade the system. Protecting natural wetlands from development impacts is different from building an engineered wetland to manage runoff.

What this could mean for a data-center site

Data-center development can include large roofs, paved service areas and drainage infrastructure. A constructed wetland may be one component of a site’s stormwater plan, but the available EPA guidance does not establish a standard data-center design, a universal sizing value or a project-specific performance result. It therefore cannot support a general claim about how much runoff a data center’s wetland would retain, how much peak flow it would reduce, or how much pollution it would remove.

A site-specific evaluation should establish rainfall and drainage conditions, site area and grades, water balance, receiving waters, treatment objectives and applicable permits. Qualified local professionals must assess these against current engineering criteria and jurisdictional requirements; general EPA guidance is not a substitute for that work.

When a stormwater wetland may—or may not—fit

  • Available land: Stormwater wetlands need a relatively large continuous area, which can make them difficult in highly urbanized settings. They may be more feasible where enough suitable downstream land is available.
  • Climate and water balance: In arid and semiarid climates, evaporation and difficulty maintaining a permanent pool can limit their use.
  • Treatment and habitat goals: Constructed wetlands can provide pollutant reduction and habitat value, but EPA notes they typically have less plant and animal biodiversity than natural wetland systems.
  • Operations and maintenance: Long-term function depends on inspection and upkeep. EPA’s Stormwater Wet Pond and Wetland Management Guidebook covers issues such as water-level fluctuation, clogging, pipe repairs, vegetation, sediment removal, access and mechanical components.

How to compare stormwater options

EPA lists stormwater wetlands among post-construction retention and detention controls, alongside wet ponds, dry detention, bioretention and filters. No option is a universal winner. A project comparison should consider:

  • How much continuous land is available.
  • Local climate and whether water levels can be sustained.
  • The intended flow-management and water-quality treatment needs.
  • Habitat and biodiversity objectives.
  • Capacity and access for inspection and maintenance.
  • Applicable local engineering standards and regulatory requirements.

EPA’s guidance is U.S.-focused. The fact sheet dates to December 2021, the wetland planning guidance was last updated December 2, 2025, and the management guidebook was published in February 2009. Confirm current local requirements and permit conditions for any real project.
