Segway-Ninebot unveiled the S-Pod at CES 2020: a seated, self-balancing electric transporter that looked strikingly like the hover chairs in Pixar’s WALL-E. The concept was aimed at enclosed campuses such as airports, malls and theme parks—not presented as an ordinary consumer scooter. Its announced figures put maximum speed around 24–25 mph and range around 43–44 miles, but those were concept specifications, not proof of a retail model.
What was the Segway S-Pod?
The S-Pod was a two-wheeled, seated personal transporter revealed by Segway-Ninebot at CES 2020. Its enclosed pod-like seat and upright profile prompted comparisons with the hover chairs in WALL-E. How did the S-Pod steer and balance?
The rider sat in the pod and used a joystick or navigation control to change direction. Segway described the vehicle as turning around its center: shifting the center of gravity controlled movement and braking. That approach differs from a typical scooter, where the rider stands and steers with handlebars.

In a description quoted by WordlessTech, Segway said the pod “spins and rotates by the center smoothly for directional changes” and that braking through a shift in the center of gravity was intended to prevent tipping. How fast and far was it supposed to go?
Contemporaneous reports gave slightly different rounded figures for the proposed performance. The RTC’s 2020 summary separated a locked speed from an unlocked maximum; other coverage reported a planned top speed or rounded maximum. These figures describe the announced concept, not independently verified real-world performance.

What happened during the CES demonstration?
During a CES demonstration, a journalist struck a wall while driving the S-Pod at about 7.5 mph. Futurism reported that no one was hurt. Segway marketing director Jeff Wu said a safety belt would be added to future versions, indicating that the demonstration also exposed safety equipment that still needed attention. Can you buy the Segway S-Pod?
There is no verified current manufacturer or retailer information establishing that the S-Pod reached production or is available to buy. The documented announcement and specifications are from 2020, so the concept should not be treated as a current retail product.
