NCOSE objected to Grok’s anime-style companion Ani over its romantic, sexualized design and what the group said it found in limited testing. The dispute also raised a practical question: could younger users reach the character or its more explicit interactions despite age rules and safety settings? The available reports point to conflicting signals, not a definitive independent safety audit.
What is Ani, Grok’s AI companion?
xAI introduced Grok “companions” in July 2025. Futurism reported that Ani was an animated, anime-style romantic character with a sultry voice and a progression system users said could unlock sexually explicit interactions. The rollout also included Bad Rudy, a foul-mouthed red panda. Futurism’s July 17 report described the launch and the criticism that followed.

Why did NCOSE object?
The National Center on Sexual Exploitation (NCOSE), an advocacy organization, argued that Ani’s design and interactions risked normalizing harmful sexual themes. In a July 17 podcast, NCOSE characterized Ani as “a very young anime girl” programmed to be “crazy in love” with the user, and said interactions could become progressively more explicit. It also pointed to the Grok app’s reported 12+ Apple App Store rating. NCOSE’s podcast and statement set out the group’s concerns.
In a July 22 statement, NCOSE said that “with minimal testing” Ani described itself as a child and appeared sexually aroused by being choked. Those are NCOSE’s claims about its own testing; the sources reviewed do not provide an independently reproduced test establishing that the same outputs occur consistently.

Could children access Ani or explicit interactions?
The accounts do not resolve that question with a single, definitive result. xAI’s policy set an age floor and parental-permission rule, while a reported user test suggested a safety-setting gap.
xAI’s stated age policy
In an FAQ dated May 12, 2025, xAI said Grok “is not directed to children or minors under the age of 13.” It said users aged 13–17 needed parental permission. The FAQ also warned that Grok could produce coarse, sexual, or violent dialogue depending on selected features. Read xAI’s FAQ.

What a reported user test found
TIME reported that a user test found Ani remained accessible after kids mode was enabled and the NSFW setting was turned off; Bad Rudy, by contrast, became more child-appropriate. TIME also reported the 13+ availability and parental-permission rule for teens. This is a journalist-reported user test, not proof that every account, device, or version behaved the same way. The OECD.AI incident record situates the episode in a broader safeguard and minors’ exposure concern. Euronews also reported NCOSE’s limited-testing claims and xAI’s position that the NSFW version required explicit commands and age authentication.
