What Is RTSP? A Guide to the Real-Time Streaming Protocol

RTSP controls real-time media sessions; the audio or video travels separately using a negotiated transport. Learn how sessions, camera URLs, ports, security, and troubleshooting work.

RTSP (Real-Time Streaming Protocol) is used to set up and control delivery of live or recorded audio and video. Think of it as a network remote control: RTSP manages the media session, while the media itself travels using a transport selected for that session. It is not a video codec, and it does not mean the video is carried inside RTSP commands.

What RTSP does—and what it does not do

The IETF describes RTSP as a “network remote control” for multimedia servers. A client uses RTSP requests to establish and manage a session with a server, such as an IP camera. The session description identifies media streams and their delivery details; setup negotiates transport parameters. The audio or video is then delivered according to those details, rather than being the RTSP control messages themselves. RFC 7826

  • RTSP: session setup and control.
  • Media transport: carries the audio or video payload, as selected or negotiated for the session.
  • Codec: describes how media is encoded; RTSP is not itself a codec.

This distinction matters when troubleshooting: a client can reach the RTSP service yet still fail to receive or decode media because the negotiated transport, network path, or media format is incompatible.

How an RTSP session works

RTSP 2.0 defines methods including DESCRIBE, SETUP, PLAY, PAUSE, and TEARDOWN. A typical session can be understood as these steps, although individual cameras and clients may implement a different sequence or a subset of methods. RFC 7826

Tapo 1080P Indoor Security Camera, Baby Monitor, Dog Camera, Wired, C100
  • ENDLESS POWER FROM SOLAR ENERGY: Just 45 minutes of direct sunlight powers the camera for a full day of use, while the built-in battery lasts up to 180 days on a single charge during cloudy days. Solar charging requires temperatures above 32°F.△
  • EASY WIRE-FREE INSTALLATION: Place the Tapo SolarCam C402 KIT where you need it without relying on nearby outlets. Install the camera and solar panel together or separately using the included 13 ft cable for flexible placement.
  • PRIORITIZE WHAT MATTERS: Set activity zones to monitor specific areas for motion or people. Free person and motion detection helps reduce unwanted alerts and notifies you when activity is detected.
  • VERSATILE VIDEO STORAGE: Store footage locally via a microSD card (up to 512GB)* or via cloud with a Tapo Care cloud subscription. Tailor your security to suit your needs, whether indoor or outdoor, you have the storage option you need.
  • FULL-COLOR 1080P, DAY AND NIGHT: See clearly in low light with a large-aperture lens and built-in spotlights. Capture full-color night vision up to 30 ft away to monitor for possible intruders or motion.
  1. Describe: The client can request a presentation description with DESCRIBE. It may identify available media streams, resource identifiers, delivery protocol, transport parameters, and encoding information.
  2. Set up: The client sends SETUP with acceptable transport parameters. The server selects supported parameters and establishes session state.
  3. Play or pause: The client uses PLAY to start delivery and may use PAUSE where the server supports it and the use case permits it.
  4. End: The client or server can use TEARDOWN to end the session.

RTSP versions: 1.0 and 2.0

RTSP 2.0 is specified by RFC 7826, published in December 2016. It obsoletes RFC 2326, the RTSP 1.0 specification from 1998. The IETF says the versions are not backward compatible except for basic version negotiation, so an RTSP 1.0 client should not be assumed to work with an RTSP 2.0 server, or vice versa. Check the documentation for both ends of the connection. RFC 7826

What port does RTSP use?

Under RFC 7826, an rtsp URI with no explicit port uses default port 554; an rtsps URI with no explicit port uses default port 322. These are standard defaults, not a guarantee that a particular camera or server is configured to listen on them. Use the endpoint and port documented for your device. RFC 7826

What does an RTSP camera URL look like?

There is no universal camera path, username format, or stream name. The URL depends on the camera model and its configuration, so use the manufacturer’s instructions rather than guessing a path.

A documented Tapo example

TP-Link’s Tapo guide, last updated September 22, 2026, gives these patterns for its supported setup:

  • High quality: rtsp://username:password@IP Address/stream1
  • Standard quality: rtsp://username:password@IP Address/stream2

The guide identifies port 554 as the default for this example. It also instructs users to create a camera account in the app; those credentials are separate from the Tapo account login. These paths, stream profiles, and account requirements are Tapo-specific—not a template that applies to every camera. TP-Link: How to View Tapo Camera on PC, NAS, or NVR Using RTSP/ONVIF

How to view an RTSP camera stream

First confirm that your camera supports RTSP and that the viewing software supports the camera’s stream and transport. For Tapo, TP-Link names VLC, Agent DVR, Synology Surveillance Station, and compatible ONVIF software, NAS, or NVR platforms as examples. Follow the instructions for your model to enable RTSP, create the camera credentials if required, and obtain its specific URL. TP-Link’s Tapo guide

  • INVISIBLE IR MODE: Get night vision up to 30ft with IR light. If the red light is distracting, switch to invisible mode for discreet monitoring.
  1. Check compatibility: Verify RTSP support for your exact camera model and confirm that the intended client or recorder accepts its stream.
  2. Enable and configure access: Use the manufacturer’s app or documentation. Set up any camera-specific account or password; do not assume your general account login is the stream credential.
  3. Find the documented endpoint: Obtain the device’s IP address, port, and stream path from its configuration or manual. Do not assume the Tapo example or port 554 applies to your device.
  4. Connect from a compatible client: Enter the camera’s RTSP URL using the client’s documented procedure. If it fails, check the credentials, IP address, port, path, network reachability, and format or transport support.

For Tapo, ONVIF may provide management features such as PTZ in compatible setups; TP-Link identifies its camera support as ONVIF Profile S. That is a vendor-specific statement, not a promise that all RTSP cameras support ONVIF or those controls. TP-Link’s Tapo guide

Is RTSP secure?

Security depends on more than the URL scheme. RFC 7826 defines rtsps for secure transport using TLS and requires RTSP clients and servers to support RTSP over TCP. It also cautions that HTTP authentication alone does not provide full RTSP message security and recommends TLS. Control signaling and media delivery are distinct security concerns, so securing one does not automatically secure the other. RFC 7826

  • Keep camera credentials and stream URLs private. A URL may expose credentials or a sensitive stream identifier.
  • Check how both control signaling and media delivery are protected in your particular implementation.
  • Avoid exposing a camera’s RTSP service directly to the public internet unless you understand and have secured the complete configuration.

For its own device setup, TP-Link advises using RTSP and ONVIF only on trusted local networks with encrypted Wi-Fi and says those protocols are not recommended for public networks. This is practical vendor guidance for Tapo; it does not replace the broader security considerations in the RTSP standard. TP-Link’s Tapo guide

Why RTSP can be difficult across networks

A session may use RTSP signaling to arrange media streams that also need to cross routers and network address translation (NAT). That can make a connection work on a local network but fail from another network. RFC 7825 discusses serious NAT issues without additional provisions. The IANA RTSP registry lists an ICE-related feature tag associated with RFC 7825, but whether it helps depends on implementation support; it is not safe to assume every camera, router, or client supports it. RFC 7825 · IANA RTSP 2.0 Parameters

Common RTSP problems and what to check

Symptom Likely checks
Connection is refused or times out Confirm the camera is reachable from the client, RTSP is enabled, and the configured port is correct. Port 554 is only a standard default, not proof of the device’s setting.
Authentication fails Check that you are using the camera’s streaming credentials, if it requires separate credentials, and verify the username and password without sharing the URL.
The client connects but shows no video Verify the correct model-specific stream path and profile, and check whether the client supports the selected media format and negotiated transport.
It works locally but not remotely Check router/NAT traversal and network policy. RTSP signaling alone does not ensure that the separate media stream can cross the network.
One device or software works, another does not Check RTSP version and method support, as well as transport and stream compatibility. RTSP 1.0 and 2.0 are not generally backward compatible.

RTSP compared with other streaming protocols

RTSP should not be labeled universally faster, lower-latency, or better than HLS, WebRTC, or another protocol without a specific implementation and use case to compare. Start by asking whether you need session control or one-way distribution, which client and server support the required combination, how media crosses NATs and firewalls, what authentication and encryption are available, and whether your camera or recorder supports it. RTSP’s control role and the potential NAT complications are defined in RFC 7826 and RFC 7825; the practical answer depends on the products at both ends. RFC 7826 · RFC 7825
