To add real-time captions, generate captions and deliver them to the streaming platform through a format it accepts. For YouTube Live, that means enabling captions and either sending embedded EIA-608/CEA-708 captions from your encoder, using the event’s HTTP caption-ingestion workflow, or—if your channel and stream are eligible—turning on YouTube’s automatic live captions. On Twitch, use a compatible caption plugin or encoder output. Test captions in the platform’s actual viewer player before going live.
Choose a caption method before you go live
A speech-to-text tool can produce words without putting them on screen. The caption feed must also reach the destination through a supported route. Choose based on your platform, caption language, latency, encoder and codec, and whether the captions need to be present in the replay.

- Platform-generated captions: simplest when available, but language, latency, eligibility, accuracy, and replay behavior may be limited.
- External caption software or a captioner: sends a separate feed to the platform and can suit events needing a controlled caption workflow.
- Embedded captions: the encoder carries caption data in the video stream; this suits workflows already configured for caption standards.
For YouTube Live, ultra-low latency does not support closed captions, and YouTube’s automatic live captions require normal latency. For Twitch, a caption plugin or encoder must actually send compatible caption data; captions do not appear automatically on every broadcast.

Add captions to YouTube Live
Option 1: YouTube automatic live captions
- Open the YouTube Live stream setup and enable Closed captions.
- If the option is available for the channel and stream, select Automatic captions and choose English.
- Use normal latency, then check the live player during a test to confirm that captions appear and are synchronized.
YouTube Help’s live-caption guidance describes automatic live captions as English-only and available for individual live streams, with availability rolling out to English channels; it includes a channel-size rollout note of more than 1,000 subscribers. Check the account’s current stream setup rather than assuming the feature is enabled. Recognition can be affected by accents, dialects, mispronunciation, background noise, poor audio, overlapping speakers, unsupported language, unrecognized speech, or long initial silence. Review the captions for errors, especially names and specialized terms.

Automatic live captions do not remain on the archived live video. YouTube may create separate automatic captions for the VOD, and those can differ from the live captions. Check the replay independently if it needs captions.
Option 2: Embed EIA-608/CEA-708 captions in the encoder
- In the event setup, enable Closed captions and choose Embedded 608/708.
- Configure the encoder or captioning system to send EIA-608/CEA-708 caption data with the stream.
- Confirm the encoder’s video codec. YouTube’s HLS guidance says embedded 608/708 captions work with H.264, not HEVC.
- Run a test and verify the captions in the viewer player.
This option is for caption data embedded in the encoded stream; selecting it in YouTube alone does not generate captions. If you use HLS ingestion, YouTube documents separate HTTP POST caption requests as working for all HLS ingestions.

Option 3: Send a caption feed to YouTube’s event ingestion URL
- In the event setup, enable Closed captions and copy the event’s signed Captions Ingestion URL.
- Give that URL to your trusted captioner or compatible caption software. Treat it as a private event credential.
- Keep the system clock accurate on the computer running the caption software.
- Use a 30-second or 60-second broadcast delay, as YouTube recommends for events using this workflow.
- Test the feed in the live player before the event. YouTube allows one caption feed per stream entry point.
YouTube lists products including Total Eclipse/AccuCap, Case CATalyst, CaptionMaker, and StreamText.Net in its caption requirements documentation. Confirm current compatibility and any software version requirements directly with YouTube and the provider before relying on a particular setup.

Add captions to Twitch
- Set up a compatible caption source. Twitch’s official guide recommends the Closed Captioning OBS Plugin as one route for speech-to-text captions in OBS.
- Alternatively, configure an encoder and caption workflow that sends a format Twitch accepts. Twitch documents embedded CEA-708/EIA-608 captions and RTMP onCaptionInfo/AMF0 caption transmission.
- Check the broadcast in Twitch’s player and use its CC button to confirm that viewers can toggle the available captions.
A caption generator by itself is not enough: its output has to reach Twitch through a supported method. Twitch’s guide identifies accepted 608/708 data formats; check the current Twitch documentation and your plugin or encoder’s compatibility before the broadcast.

Check language, latency, codec, and replay behavior

Test the complete viewer experience
- Identify the platform and stream latency setting.
- Choose automatic captions, a captioner or third-party feed, or encoder-embedded captions according to language and platform support.
- Confirm the required caption format, encoder protocol, and codec before the event.
- For YouTube event ingestion, give the signed caption URL only to the trusted caption provider, keep the system clock accurate, and remember that each entry point supports one feed.
- Run a private or unlisted test. In the platform player, check that captions appear, stay synchronized, and can be toggled if they are closed captions.
- Review the replay separately if it needs captions.
Troubleshooting captions that do not appear or look wrong
- No captions appear: Check that closed captions are enabled in the event setup and that the chosen route matches the encoder or caption software output. Confirm that the feed is reaching the correct event.
- Embedded captions are missing on YouTube: Verify that the encoder sends EIA-608/CEA-708 data and, for the documented HLS embedded-caption route, that the video uses H.264 rather than HEVC.
- Separate YouTube captions stop arriving: Recheck the signed ingestion URL, confirm that only one feed is configured for the entry point, and verify the caption computer’s system clock.
- Automatic captions are unavailable: Check the account’s stream setup for eligibility and availability, use English and normal latency, or select a supported external caption workflow.
- Captions lag behind speech: Check the caption source’s timing and the stream’s latency. Test synchronization in the viewer player before the event; YouTube recommends a 30- or 60-second broadcast delay for its event ingestion workflow.
- Words are inaccurate or missing: Improve the audio where possible, reduce overlapping speech, and review names and technical terms. Automatic recognition can make errors, and its quality is not guaranteed.
- Live captions are absent from the archive: YouTube automatic live captions do not remain on the live archive. Check whether separate VOD captions are available and verify their accuracy independently.
