RTMP ingest is the step where a streaming platform receives a live audio-and-video signal sent by an encoder. In a typical workflow, the encoder sends the prepared stream to the platform’s ingest endpoint; the platform receives and authorizes it, then prepares it for viewers. In short: encoder → ingest endpoint → platform → viewers.
What “ingest” means in live streaming
Ingest is the inbound contribution connection from the broadcaster’s encoder to a streaming service. It is not the connection viewers use to watch. A camera or other source captures the material, production software or hardware assembles it, and an encoder packages it into a signal the destination can accept. The platform receives that signal at an ingest server.

For example, Twitch describes its ingest subsystem as the first stop for a broadcast: streams enter there, are authorized and registered, and are then prepared for viewers. Some cloud workflows also transcode the received input and package it into formats used for playback.

- Capture and produce. A camera, screen capture, or other source supplies video and audio. Production software or hardware can combine sources, scenes, graphics, and sound.
- Encode. An encoder compresses and packages the live signal using formats supported by the destination. For YouTube RTMP and RTMPS ingest, YouTube’s protocol comparison lists H.264 video.
- Connect to the ingest endpoint. The encoder opens a connection to the platform’s receiving address. It sends the stream name or key required by that service.
- Platform receives and prepares the stream. The service checks and registers the incoming broadcast, then makes it available through its viewer-facing delivery system.
- Check status and go live. Use the platform’s preview, health, or status indicators to confirm it is receiving the signal before starting the public broadcast.
Google Cloud’s Live Stream API illustrates the difference between ingest and delivery: it accepts RTMP or SRT input, transcodes it, and can output HLS or DASH for playback. RTMP is therefore commonly the contribution leg into a service, not necessarily the protocol used all the way to viewers.

What an RTMP URL and stream key do
An RTMP address identifies the receiving server and application path; the stream key or stream name identifies or authorizes the particular broadcast. Twitch documents an RTMP URL in the form rtmp://<ingest-server>/app/<stream-key>. Its help material warns that someone with a shared key could compromise the channel, so treat the key like a password.
YouTube’s LiveStreams API provides an ingestion URL and a stream name. Depending on the encoder, enter these in separate fields or combine them as STREAM_URL/STREAM_NAME. YouTube also documents optional backup ingestion addresses, including RTMPS-specific addresses. Field labels and URL formats differ between encoders, so follow the destination’s current instructions and the fields shown in your particular encoder.

RTMP vs. RTMPS, HLS, DASH, and SRT
RTMP is not the only way to send a contribution stream. The right option depends on destination support, encryption, latency needs, codecs, resolution, and what your encoder can send. Protocol support is platform-specific; do not assume an option available on one service is available on another.

1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors| Protocol | What it means for ingest | Important qualification |
|---|---|---|
| RTMP | A common contribution protocol. YouTube lists it with H.264 and as suitable for normal, low, or ultra-low latency. | YouTube marks RTMP ingest as unencrypted. |
| RTMPS | RTMP carried through an SSL/TLS connection. YouTube lists it with H.264 and as suitable for normal, low, or ultra-low latency. | YouTube specifies an rtmps URL, a valid endpoint and application path, and port 443 for its RTMPS ingest. Encryption protects transport to the ingest service; it does not protect a stream key you disclose. |
| HLS | YouTube documents HLS ingest and lists support for additional codecs, including HEVC. | YouTube presents it as suited to some higher-resolution workflows; sending segments typically adds latency compared with a continuous contribution stream. |
| DASH | YouTube documents DASH ingest and lists support for additional codecs, including VP9. | YouTube presents it as suited to some higher-resolution workflows; sending segments typically adds latency compared with a continuous contribution stream. |
| SRT | Google Cloud’s Live Stream API accepts SRT as well as RTMP input. | Google Cloud recommends SRT where possible for its own service, citing packet-drop recovery, forward error correction, multiple audio elementary streams, and higher bandwidth. That is a product-specific recommendation, not a universal claim that RTMP is obsolete. |

Do you need a dedicated RTMP encoder?
You need an encoder capable of sending a stream using a protocol accepted by the destination, but it does not have to be a dedicated hardware appliance. Twitch’s broadcast documentation includes software encoders such as OBS Studio, hardware video encoders, and consoles. The choice depends on your production needs and whether the device supports the destination’s required protocol and settings.
Google Cloud defines an input endpoint as the endpoint to which an encoder sends its input stream. Its Live Stream API overview explains that service’s input workflow; YouTube’s API reference documents the ingestion URL and stream name: YouTube LiveStreams API.

Set up an RTMP stream safely
- In the destination platform, find the current ingest server or URL and the matching stream key or name.
- In your encoder, select the destination’s service preset if one is available. Otherwise, enter the endpoint and key/name in the format the encoder expects.
- Use RTMPS when the platform supports it and you want encrypted transport. Confirm that the URL scheme, endpoint, application path, and required port match the platform’s instructions.
- Check that the encoder’s video and audio codecs are supported by the destination. YouTube currently lists H.264 for RTMP and RTMPS; verify the platform’s current settings guidance for your full configuration.
- Start the encoder and inspect the platform’s preview or stream-health indicators. YouTube’s API exposes active, inactive, and error stream states as well as health information.
- Keep the stream key private. If it is exposed, replace or revoke it using the platform’s key-management controls where available.
Twitch’s official Video Broadcast documentation describes its ingest subsystem and RTMP address pattern. YouTube’s protocol options and supported details can change; use the destination’s current setup screen and documentation rather than assuming an old endpoint or key format remains valid.
Common RTMP ingest problems and fixes
- The platform shows no incoming signal. Check that the encoder is running and that the ingest URL, application path, and key/name match the destination. Look for accidental spaces, truncated values, or a stale key.
- The encoder connects but the platform reports an error. Check the platform’s stream-health details and confirm that the selected protocol and audio/video codecs are supported. A protocol accepted by another service may not be accepted here.
- RTMPS will not connect. Confirm that you used the RTMPS-specific address and correct path and, where YouTube’s RTMPS instructions apply, port 443. Do not simply change the URL prefix on an unrelated endpoint.
- The stream works but latency is higher than expected. Confirm the selected ingest protocol and latency mode. YouTube classifies RTMP and RTMPS as capable of normal, low, or ultra-low latency, while its HLS and DASH workflows are segment-based and typically add latency. Actual behavior depends on the platform and configuration.
- The key may have been exposed. Replace or revoke it through the platform’s key-management controls where available, then update the encoder with the new value.
Or let it run in the cloud
RTMP ingest is the connection an encoder uses to send a live signal to a platform. If your goal is instead to keep a YouTube channel live around the clock by playing uploaded recordings, StreamNeo is a separate cloud workflow: upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live. StreamNeo loops the uploaded videos from the cloud, so nothing has to stay on at home. It is for YouTube and uploaded videos, not live camera input.
