It is a pace-of-play approach, not a separate rule or permission to hit without checking that others are clear.
What ready golf means
The R&A says there is no official definition of “ready golf.” In practice, it means being prepared to play promptly and, when appropriate, letting a ready player go ahead of the usual order. The USGA encourages this in stroke play when it is done safely and responsibly.

The usual order still provides a default: on the tee, the side with the lowest score on the previous hole generally has the honor; during a hole, the ball farthest from the hole is usually played first. Ready golf allows exceptions in the circumstances covered by the Rules; it does not erase those defaults.

When to play out of turn
Play out of turn when it can help the group’s pace or is convenient, and you can do so without creating a safety risk, distracting another player, or interfering with play. For example, if one player is ready while another is still preparing, the ready player may go first if everyone is clear and the group is comfortable with it.

How the Rules treat ready golf by format
| Situation | What applies |
|---|---|
| Stroke play | Players may play out of turn safely and responsibly to help pace or for convenience; the USGA describes this as proper and encouraged. |
| Match play | Players may agree that one of them will play out of turn to save time. |
| Four-ball partners | When it is their side’s turn, partners may play in whatever order they think best. |
These distinctions matter: the stroke-play encouragement does not mean that a match-play player should unilaterally disregard the order. In match play, agree with the opponent before taking the out-of-turn approach.
Be ready even when it is your turn
Ready golf is also about preparation, not just changing order. Think through your shot while others are playing, choose your club when practical, and move efficiently to your ball. Under the USGA’s pace guidance, a player should make a stroke within 40 seconds after being able to play without interference or distraction—and usually in less time. That is guidance for making a stroke, not a target or guarantee for the length of a round.

Do you need a rangefinder or GPS?
No device is required. The USGA suggests considering an electronic rangefinder or GPS as a pace-of-play aid where permitted by Local Rule. These tools do not replace checking that it is safe to play, and ready golf does not depend on owning one.
