You can often clean an intact item salvaged from the trash if it has ordinary dirt and you can safely handle, wash, and dry it. Do not bring it home or try to wash it if it may contain unknown chemicals, sharps, extensive body fluids, significant mold in porous material, or evidence of pests. Trash origin alone does not make an item unsafe: in most household situations, cleaning removes most germs, and routine disinfection is not necessary unless someone is sick or at higher risk.
Decide whether it is safe to handle
Inspect the item before touching or moving it. Do not reach blindly into a bag, bin, or pile. Look for broken glass, needles, leaking containers, unknown powders or liquids, blood or other body fluids, mold, and signs of pests. These are warning signs, not a complete universal inspection checklist.

- Stop if you find a needle or other sharp. Do not pick it up, wash it, or put your hands near it. Sharps can puncture skin and expose you to infection; follow local instructions for safe handling and disposal. See the CDC’s Sharps Safety guidance and contact your local health or waste authority if you need advice.
- Do not handle unknown chemicals or leaking hazardous products. Leftover paints, cleaners, oils, batteries, and pesticides may need special handling. Ask your local household hazardous-waste authority about what to do; do not pour unknown liquids down a drain or combine them with other products.
- Do not assume ordinary cleaning is enough after a specific exposure. Floodwater or known infectious contamination creates a different risk from everyday household dirt. Follow relevant public-health advice for that situation.
If you cannot identify the contamination or handle the item without risk, leave it where it is and ask the appropriate local agency or a qualified specialist for guidance.
Choose what to salvage and what to leave behind
Material and contamination matter more than the fact that an item was discarded. Hard, nonporous objects are generally easier to clean than absorbent ones. Consider whether you can remove visible dirt, reach all surfaces, use a compatible cleaning method, and dry the item completely.

Clean first, then decide whether to disinfect
For an item that is safe to handle, start with soap or detergent, water, and scrubbing if the material can tolerate that method. Follow any care instructions for the item. Cleaning removes dirt and most germs; soil and debris can also make it harder for a disinfectant to reach germs. The CDC advises: “Clean surfaces before they are sanitized or disinfected because impurities like dirt may make it harder for chemicals to get to and kill germs.”

After cleaning, assess the remaining risk. Disinfection is generally unnecessary for routine household cleaning. It may be appropriate if someone in the household is sick or at higher risk, or if the item’s intended use and contamination make disinfection necessary. Do not disinfect automatically just because the item came from the trash.
Disinfect only with a product suited to the item
If disinfection is warranted, use a product whose label covers the item’s surface and intended use. A disinfectant is not universally suitable for every material, and the label’s claims apply only when the product is used as directed. Check the label for:

Use an EPA-registered disinfectant only in accordance with its label; registration does not mean every product is suitable for every rescued object. Never mix cleaning products or disinfectants. Keep children and pets away during use and store chemicals securely afterward. Gloves may be appropriate when the label calls for them, but they do not protect against punctures and cannot make unknown waste safe.

Dry the item completely before using or storing it. If visible contamination remains, it still smells strongly of chemicals or waste, or cleaning would damage it, stop and seek advice from the relevant local agency or a qualified restoration specialist. For valuable furniture, textiles, or other difficult-to-clean belongings, a specialist can assess whether restoration is practical.
