Sony says it can improve image detail and stability. The first announced games are Marvel’s Wolverine and Ghost of Yōtei, where QSSR will arrive as an additional graphics option through game updates—not as a new console-wide setting.
What is QSSR on PS5?
QSSR stands for Quick Spectral Super Resolution. Sony announced it on October 1, 2026, describing it as an AI-upscaling tier developed from Project Amethyst, its AI graphics collaboration with AMD. Sony presents QSSR as an evolution of PSSR, the upscaling technology introduced on PS5 Pro.

Upscaling reconstructs an image to make a game look sharper than it might when rendered at its original resolution. Sony says QSSR is intended to add image detail and stability while fitting the performance constraints of the standard PS5. Its approach uses a streamlined neural network architecture and an implementation hand-tuned for the console. Sony’s announcement does not provide measured resolution targets or quantify the visual improvement.

Which PS5 games support QSSR?
Sony named two games as the first to receive QSSR. Both were being patched to add it as an optional graphics setting:

- Includes DualSense Wireless Controller, 1TB SSD, 2 Horizontal Stand Feet, HDMI Cable, AC power cord, USB cable, printed materials, ASTRO’s PLAYROOM (Pre-installed game)
- Vertical Stand sold seperately
| Game | How QSSR is offered |
|---|---|
| Marvel’s Wolverine | Through a game patch as an additional graphics option, according to Sony’s October 1, 2026 announcement. |
| Ghost of Yōtei | Through a game patch as an additional graphics option, according to Sony’s October 1, 2026 announcement. |
Sony says QSSR will be made broadly available to PlayStation developers and expects more games to use it. The announcement does not give a release schedule or identify additional confirmed titles, so support should be checked title by title rather than assumed for every PS5 game.
Do I need a PS5 Pro or new hardware?
No new hardware is indicated for QSSR on the standard PS5. Sony describes it as an option being added to supported PS5 games through updates. It is not described as a required accessory or a system-wide toggle that automatically upscales every game.

PSSR remains Sony’s higher upscaling tier for PS5 Pro, while QSSR is adapted for standard PS5. Sony attributes the distinction to QSSR’s streamlined network and console-specific tuning; it does not publish a quantitative comparison between the two technologies.
What has Sony demonstrated about image quality?
Sony’s announcement makes qualitative claims, not a quantified performance promise. It reports no benchmark, controlled before-and-after comparison, percentage improvement, resolution target, or frame-rate effect. The outcome may depend on how each supported game implements the option.

Two developers quoted by Sony described the expected visual benefits. Mike Fitzgerald, Head of Technology at Insomniac Games, said QSSR adds “more pixel-level clarity and stability” in Marvel’s Wolverine. Jasmin Patry, Lead Rendering Engineer at Sucker Punch Productions, said it resolves fine character and environment details with temporal stability. These are developer descriptions published by Sony, not independent test results.
Quick Recap
How to check whether QSSR is available in a game
- Install the latest update for a PS5 game that has announced QSSR support.
- Open that game’s graphics or display settings and look for QSSR as an additional option. Menu labels and the precise setting may vary by title.
- Compare the available graphics options in the game itself; Sony has not announced a universal PS5 setting or a single performance profile for QSSR.
