What is PUP.Optional.ShiftBrowser?
It is a Malwarebytes detection classification for Shift Browser, which Malwarebytes categorizes as a potentially unwanted program (PUP). The vendor says the browser is promoted through confusing advertisements on sites offering manuals, recipes, templates, and other popular documents. It says it blocks the downloader that fetches the actual installer, so users can make an informed decision about installing it. Malwarebytes’ ShiftBrowser detection entry describes that detection; it does not say every installed copy behaves identically.

Is PUP.Optional.ShiftBrowser a virus?
The detection name alone does not establish that Shift Browser is a virus in the sense of destructive malware. Malwarebytes uses PUP classifications for software that some people may consider useful, but that can be flagged for reasons such as installation without consent, bundling, aggressive advertising, or misleading claims. The classification is a warning to assess the software and how it arrived—not proof of device compromise, credential theft, or a false positive. Malwarebytes’ entry and its general PUP guidance do not adjudicate an individual device’s alert.
How do I remove PUP.Optional.ShiftBrowser?

- Download and install Malwarebytes for Windows, then open the app.
- Select Scan to start a Threat Scan.
- When the scan finishes, choose Quarantine for the detections you want removed.
- Restart the computer if Malwarebytes prompts you to do so.
Malwarebytes says it can detect and remove PUPs without further user interaction; that is vendor guidance, not a guarantee of the same outcome for every device. See its PUP guidance for the Windows workflow.
Should I allow-list Shift Browser?
Allow-listing is appropriate only if you have decided to keep the program and trust the specific files. Do not use an exclusion simply to dismiss an alert for an unfamiliar download. Malwarebytes’ detection-specific directions for Windows are:

- Open Malwarebytes and go to Detection History, then Allow List.
- Select Add, choose the file-or-folder exclusion type, and select the relevant folder. Repeat for any secondary files or folders that need an exclusion.
- If the program needs internet access, add an Allow an application to connect to the internet exclusion for the relevant file.
These exclusions change what Malwarebytes blocks or scans; they do not establish that the software is safe. The exact options are documented in the ShiftBrowser detection entry.

How should I judge a specific alert?
Check the detection details in Malwarebytes and consider whether you recognize installing Shift Browser and where the download came from. An alert associated with the confusing-ad channel Malwarebytes describes is a reason for caution. The vendor’s public entry does not prove that a specific file on your PC is malicious or harmless; if you did not choose to install it, quarantine is the safer response.
