It reconstructs a higher-resolution image from a game rendered internally at a lower resolution, aiming to preserve detail and image stability without requiring the console to render every pixel at the final output resolution. It works only in supported games; it does not make every PS5 Pro game native 4K or guarantee a fixed visual or performance gain.
What is PSSR on PS5 Pro?
PSSR stands for PlayStation Spectral Super Resolution. Sony introduced it with PS5 Pro as an AI-driven image-upscaling library in the console’s graphics pipeline. In February 2026, PS5 and PS5 Pro Lead Architect Mark Cerny described it as a library that “analyzes game images pixel by pixel as it upscales them.”

Here, “AI” means machine-learning-based image reconstruction, not a chatbot or a feature that generates artwork. Sony’s public descriptions explain the purpose and broad approach, but do not disclose the full model design, training process, input data, or reconstruction pipeline.
How does PlayStation Spectral Super Resolution work?
- The game renders an image internally. To balance visual quality and performance, a supported game may render at a resolution below its final display output.
- PSSR reconstructs an upscaled image. Its learned image-reconstruction system analyzes the image and produces a higher-resolution output intended to retain detail and improve clarity and stability.
This is more than simply sharpening a finished screenshot: Sony describes pixel-by-pixel analysis during upscaling, and its March 2026 announcement says the latest evolution improves reconstruction precision and motion stability. Sony has not published enough technical detail to establish exactly which buffers or motion inputs PSSR uses, how its network is trained, or how large its model is.

Does PSSR make games run at native 4K?
No. PSSR can help a supported game produce a higher-resolution output from a lower internal rendering resolution; that is not the same as rendering every frame natively at 4K. The internal resolution and result depend on the game’s implementation and settings. PSSR also does not promise a particular frame rate or a universal image-quality improvement.
Sony’s November 7, 2024 PS5 Pro announcement said the console had 67% more Compute Units and 28% faster memory than the then-current PS5, enabling up to 45% faster gameplay rendering. Those are Sony’s launch-announcement hardware comparisons, not a PSSR-only performance test.

What changed in the upgraded PSSR?
On February 27, 2026, Cerny said the upgraded version takes a “very different approach” to both the neural network and the overall algorithm. Sony tied the revised technology to Project Amethyst, its collaboration with AMD, and said there had been an additional six months of refinement after the co-developed technology’s use in AMD FSR 4. That connection does not establish that PSSR and FSR 4 are the same product or interchangeable.
In its March 16, 2026 update announcement, Sony said the upgraded version offers more precise image reconstruction, improved motion stability, clearer fine detail, and developers more flexibility to balance performance and fidelity. These are Sony’s stated goals and product claims, not a universal measured gain across games.

How do I enable the upgraded PSSR?
Sony said PS5 Pro users could apply the new system-level enhancement to games that already support PSSR. To enable it, open Settings > Screen and Video > Video Output on PS5 Pro and select Enhance PSSR Image Quality. The option is intended for supported games, not as a way to add PSSR to every title.
Sony cautions that results vary by game and that unexpected visual effects may occur. If a supported game looks worse with the enhancement enabled, switch the option off. Game-specific implementations can differ from the optional system-level setting.

Which PS5 Pro games support PSSR?
Sony reported on February 27, 2026 that PSSR had been used to boost effective resolution in over 50 PS5 Pro titles. That is the count Sony gave on that date, not a current total or a promise of support in every PS5 Pro game.
Sony’s March 2026 announcement named titles using or adopting the upgraded version, including Resident Evil Requiem, Silent Hill f, Monster Hunter Wilds, Dragon’s Dogma 2, Final Fantasy VII Rebirth, Control, Alan Wake 2, Senua’s Saga: Hellblade II, Nioh 3, and Rise of the Ronin. It also identified Crimson Desert, Assassin’s Creed Shadows, and Cyberpunk 2077 for support or forthcoming patches at that time. Support and patch status can change, so check the game’s current PS5 Pro feature information for its implementation.

One developer’s account
IO Interactive said upgraded PSSR was enabled by default in 007 First Light on PS5 Pro. In a May 19, 2026 account, the studio described less shimmering and flicker, better temporal stability during motion, and clearer hair and fine detail. Those are the developer’s observations about that title, not independent measurements or a guarantee of the same results elsewhere.
Is PSSR available on the standard PS5?
PSSR is associated with PS5 Pro. Sony’s October 1, 2026 announcement of Quick Spectral Super Resolution (QSSR) introduced a separate AI-upscaling performance tier for the base PS5; it did not rename PSSR or establish that PSSR itself runs on the standard console. Sony described QSSR as using a streamlined neural network and hand-tuned implementation to fit base PS5 performance limits.
