A robot that senses its surroundings and moves in response is a common example. Generative AI, by contrast, is best known for creating digital content such as text, images, audio, or video. The categories can overlap: a generative or multimodal model may help a robot interpret information or plan, while the larger system senses and acts in the physical environment.
What does physical AI mean?
Physical AI is an emerging industry term for AI connected to machines that perceive and act in the physical world. NVIDIA’s glossary definition describes AI that enables autonomous machines to perceive, understand, reason, and perform complex actions in the real world. The important distinction is the system’s connection to sensors, a physical environment, and actions—not simply whether it uses a particular type of model.

A chatbot that only returns text is not, by itself, a physical-AI system. A robot or autonomous vehicle that takes in information about its surroundings and uses AI to choose or carry out actions is a more typical example. Physical AI does not necessarily mean a machine is generally intelligent: a system may be designed for a limited task or operating environment.
How is physical AI different from generative AI?
Generative AI describes systems that produce new digital content, often in response to a prompt. Physical AI describes a system’s relationship to the real world: it takes in information and can cause physical actions. These are different ways of describing AI, so a system can fit both descriptions.

| Aspect | Generative AI | Physical AI |
|---|---|---|
| Typical output or effect | Digital content, such as text, images, audio, or video. | Actions in a physical environment, such as a robot moving or a machine responding to its surroundings. |
| Typical inputs | Prompts and digital media. | Sensor readings and information about the environment; it may also use text, images, or other inputs. |
| Physical embodiment | No physical body is required. | A robot, vehicle, or other physical system is part of the loop. |
| What needs validation | Whether generated content meets the task’s quality requirements. | Whether behavior works under real-world conditions and respects relevant safety constraints. This is a practical implication of acting in the physical world, not a formal definition. |
The distinction is not that one category uses AI and the other does not. It is that generative AI is associated with producing digital outputs, while physical AI involves perception and action through machines. A physical-AI system may use a generative model, but it does not have to; and a robot using AI is not automatically a general-purpose system.
Can generative AI control a robot?
It can be one component of a robot-control system. For example, a model may help interpret a spoken request or visual input, or contribute to a plan. Other system components must connect that interpretation to the robot’s sensors and actions. The complete setup—not a text-generating model in isolation—is what interacts with the physical environment.

Robotics is a central example of physical AI, but the phrase is not a universally standardized technical category. Its meaning varies by speaker and context. The Associated Press reported on June 23, 2026, that robotics researcher Martial Hebert described physical and embodied AI as an evolution of what used to be called robotics, while noting that definitions differ. That is one researcher’s characterization, not evidence of industry-wide agreement.

In practice, “physical AI” is often used to emphasize AI capabilities connected to machines operating in the real world. NVIDIA also uses the related term “embodied AI” for AI that interacts with the physical world; its embodied AI glossary discusses learning from human-demonstration data. Since usage can vary, it is useful to check what a company or author means when using either label.
What are examples of physical AI?
Robots and autonomous vehicles are common examples. Company materials also discuss industrial automation and humanoid systems. Those examples indicate areas of activity, not proof that a particular capability is broadly deployed or has been validated at scale.

How are physical-AI systems developed?
Development can involve collecting or generating data, training a policy—the part of a system that helps select actions—and testing behavior in simulation before moving to real hardware. Simulation can help developers explore situations and refine a system, but success in a simulated setting does not by itself establish how a machine will behave in the real world. The transition from simulation to hardware is often called sim-to-real.
