Phobos is Mars’s small inner moon and the main target of Japan’s Martian Moons eXploration (MMX) mission. It is difficult to explore because scientists still do not know whether it formed from debris blasted off Mars or is an asteroid captured by Mars, while its extremely weak gravity makes navigation, landing, driving, sampling and departure unlike operations on a planet. MMX is planned to survey Phobos and Deimos, send the Idefix rover across Phobos, collect more than 10 grams of material with two different samplers, and return that material to Earth. JAXA’s schedule, current as of October 13, 2026, calls for launch in Japanese fiscal year 2026, arrival at Mars in 2027, operations through 2030 and capsule recovery in Australia in Japanese fiscal year 2031; those are plans rather than completed events.
Phobos in brief
Phobos is the inner of Mars’s two moons. It is the primary scientific target of MMX, a Japanese-led sample-return mission that will also observe Deimos. The moon’s importance is disproportionate to its size: material on or just below its surface could preserve evidence about how the entire Mars system formed.

Two explanations dominate the origin debate. In one, a giant impact on Mars threw rock into orbit and that debris eventually assembled into the moons. In the other, Phobos and Deimos are asteroids that Mars captured. Both ideas can explain some observations, but neither has been established. Remote sensing and returned samples are intended to provide the chemical, mineralogical and physical evidence needed to distinguish them.

Phobos is also a difficult place to investigate directly. Spacecraft have generally made brief flybys rather than remaining near the Martian moons for long periods. As a result, mission planners have less detailed knowledge of the terrain, loose surface material and local environment than they would for a body visited repeatedly by orbiters and landers.

Why scientists still have basic questions
An unresolved origin changes the mission’s scientific priorities
If Phobos formed from Martian impact debris, its material could contain a mixture of Mars-derived rock and material altered by the impact. If it is a captured asteroid, its composition might instead resemble a primitive small body that formed elsewhere in the solar system. The distinction affects what scientists infer about Mars’s early history, the delivery of material through the inner solar system and the evolution of the Mars–Phobos–Deimos system.
MMX therefore is not designed merely to photograph an unusual moon. Its instruments will measure the body at several scales, and the returned material can be examined in Earth laboratories with techniques that cannot be carried on a spacecraft. The mission’s purpose is to test the competing formation scenarios rather than announce one in advance.
Most existing knowledge comes from limited encounters
The European Space Agency notes that no spacecraft has spent a long time operating close to the Martian moons. Flyby data can reveal shape, broad surface properties and some environmental measurements, but it leaves gaps in local topography, regolith texture and the way loose grains behave when disturbed. Those gaps matter when a spacecraft must select a landing area, make contact and collect a sample without a detailed, ground-truth map.

Phobos has such weak surface gravity that ordinary intuition about weight and traction fails. ESA gives a useful comparison: the 25-kilogram Idefix rover would have a surface weight equivalent to about 15 grams on Phobos. The rover’s mass remains 25 kilograms; only the gravitational force acting on it is much smaller.
That condition affects wheel contact, steering and stopping. A rover can press only lightly into the ground, so a wheel may slip more readily on loose grains. A push from a wheel, drill or sampling mechanism can produce a reaction that changes the vehicle’s position or attitude. A maneuver that would be harmless on Earth can therefore disturb the rover or spacecraft at Phobos.

Landing is similarly unusual. The vehicle must approach a tiny body while accounting for its irregular shape, weak gravity and uncertain surface properties. A conventional descent profile designed for a planet with a substantial atmosphere and stronger gravity does not apply. MMX’s guidance, navigation and orbit-control systems must keep the spacecraft on the intended trajectory during close passes, descent and surface contact.
These are engineering consequences of the documented low-gravity environment, not claims that a particular Phobos maneuver has already been demonstrated. The mission has to characterize the surface and then operate within the limits that measurement reveals.

Idefix is intended to reduce uncertainty before the main spacecraft commits to sampling. JAXA and ESA describe the rover as a way to investigate the physical properties of Phobos’s regolith, the layer of loose material covering the surface. Observations of grain behavior, terrain and local conditions can help planners choose safer operating procedures and provide calibration data for the spacecraft’s instruments.
The sequence matters. A sample-return mission cannot simply arrive, touch down anywhere and start drilling. It must understand whether the selected area can support contact, how loose the material is, how the vehicle will react to a tool touching the ground and which observations are needed to interpret the collected grains. A mobile survey gives the mission information at more than one location instead of relying only on orbital views.
MMX’s two ways to collect Phobos material
The mission carries two complementary collection systems. Their designs address different kinds of material and reduce reliance on a single sampling method.

| Sampler | How it works | Documented target |
|---|---|---|
| C-Sampler | A coring device that penetrates the surface | Material from as deep as 2 centimetres |
| P-Sampler | Pressurized gas lofts loose surface particles into a container | Loose regolith collected without relying only on coring |
The C-Sampler is significant because material below the immediate surface may have experienced different exposure to radiation, micrometeoroid impacts and the space environment. Its planned depth is up to 2 centimetres, not a claim that every location will yield a core of that length.

The P-Sampler uses gas pressure to lift surface material into a container. On a body where contact forces can move the spacecraft, a pneumatic approach offers a different way to gather loose grains. The two methods also give scientists samples with different physical contexts: near-surface particles and material obtained by a coring action.
After collection, the sample must be sealed, stored, carried through the Mars system and protected during the return journey. JAXA’s stated goal is more than 10 grams of Phobos material. The quantity is a mission plan, not a completed result, and the usable mass will depend on what the surface and samplers provide.
It is a Mars-system mission, not a single landing
MMX’s difficulty comes from the number of linked operations. The spacecraft must travel from Earth to Mars, conduct repeated observations near Phobos, perform surface work, observe Deimos, leave the Mars sphere of influence and send a return capsule toward Earth. A failure in navigation, communications, thermal control, propulsion, landing or sample handling can affect later stages.
JAXA identifies guidance and navigation, orbit control, landing, thermal control, communications, propulsion and sampling as separate mission systems. They are nevertheless coupled. Orbit control determines whether the spacecraft can reach a safe approach geometry. Communications must support decisions made across interplanetary distances. Thermal and power systems must keep instruments and mechanisms within operating limits while the vehicle moves between mission phases.

The planned mission sequence
- Launch: JAXA plans to launch MMX on an H3 rocket in Japanese fiscal year 2026.
- Mars arrival: The spacecraft is scheduled to reach Mars in 2027, after roughly a year of interplanetary travel.
- Phobos reconnaissance: MMX will make detailed observations around Phobos to improve knowledge of its shape, surface and environment.
- Deimos observations: The spacecraft will also visit and study Mars’s outer moon, adding context for comparing the two bodies.
- Idefix surface survey: The rover will investigate regolith and terrain properties that influence landing and sampling decisions.
- Sample collection: The C-Sampler and P-Sampler are planned to obtain Phobos material, with a mission goal of more than 10 grams.
- Departure: JAXA schedules departure from the Mars sphere in 2030.
- Earth return: The sample capsule is planned to separate for Earth entry and recovery in Australia in Japanese fiscal year 2031, followed by transfer to JAXA’s Institute of Space and Astronautical Science facility.
Japanese fiscal year dates do not mean the same calendar window as a calendar year, and all of these dates can change as development and mission operations proceed.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. What MMX will measure
MMX combines remote observation, environmental measurements, rover work and returned material. NASA describes the MEGANE instrument as measuring neutrons and gamma rays emitted from Phobos so scientists can infer elemental composition across the surface. Elemental maps can help test whether the moon’s chemistry is consistent with Martian material or with a captured asteroid population.
Other mission instruments are intended to examine topography, near-infrared composition, dust and ion environments, radiation and surface imaging. Together, these measurements connect composition with terrain and with the space environment around Mars. A returned sample then allows laboratory analysis at a level of precision and flexibility that spacecraft instruments cannot match.
The combination is important because no single measurement settles the origin question. A surface spectrum can suggest minerals, an elemental measurement can reveal bulk chemistry, and a sample can expose textures or components that remote instruments cannot resolve. Comparing all three lines of evidence is more reliable than treating one unusual reading as decisive.
Why sample return is harder than a flyby
A flyby can complete its observations while moving past the target. MMX must instead enter and maintain carefully controlled trajectories, operate near a body with very weak gravity, make physical contact, collect material, secure it and preserve it for a second interplanetary leg.
Best Value
The sample capsule adds another demanding transition. It must separate from the spacecraft, follow an Earth-return trajectory, survive atmospheric entry and land for recovery. ESA says recovery is planned in Australia, with the capsule then transferred to JAXA’s ISAS facility. Every handoff introduces requirements for containment, tracking and procedural control so that the material remains scientifically useful.
The mission’s long timeline also creates operational risk. Hardware must function after years in space, commands and status information must cross large distances, and teams must coordinate spacecraft, rover and sample systems in an environment where immediate hands-on intervention is impossible.
How the mission reduces uncertainty instead of assuming it away
- Reconnaissance before contact: Orbital observations can identify terrain and surface characteristics before a landing or sampling attempt.
- Rover measurements: Idefix can examine regolith properties directly and supply calibration data for the larger spacecraft.
- Two sampling techniques: Coring and pneumatic collection provide alternatives if local material does not behave as expected.
- Multiple observation types: Imaging, topography, near-infrared sensing, elemental measurements and environmental instruments address different sources of uncertainty.
- Sample return: Earth-based laboratories can test the collected material with instruments too large or complex to fly.
These measures do not make the mission routine. They make the unknowns measurable and give operators more information before committing to the most delicate steps.
What would count as a successful scientific result?
A decisive result would connect Phobos’s elemental and mineral composition, physical samples and geological context to one of the two leading origin scenarios. MMX could also produce an important result without completely eliminating one hypothesis. For example, it might show that the moon contains mixtures or alteration patterns requiring a more detailed formation model than a simple “impact debris” or “captured asteroid” label.
The mission can also improve understanding of how Mars’s moons evolved. Measurements of surface processes, dust and radiation exposure can show how a small body changes over time. Comparisons between Phobos and Deimos may reveal whether they share a history or only happen to orbit the same planet.
Bottom line: a small moon with a mission-sized set of problems
Phobos is difficult to explore because nearly every essential fact is coupled to uncertainty. Scientists lack long-duration close observations, the moon’s origin remains unsettled, and its weak gravity makes ordinary landing and driving assumptions unreliable. MMX addresses those problems in stages: observe from orbit, survey the regolith with Idefix, collect material with both coring and pneumatic systems, study Deimos for comparison, and return the sample to Earth. If the current schedule holds, the mission will turn Phobos from a sparsely measured Mars moon into a body that can be tested with both spacecraft data and laboratory evidence.
