Outbyte PC Repair FREEClear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Outbyte Driver Updater FREEScan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Fixing a loose Gundam model starts with identifying what is actually loose. A moving ball joint needs a reversible friction or fit correction; a stationary armor part may be suitable for a permanent plastic bond; a cracked, missing, or defective component should be handled through the manufacturer or retailer. Do not use solvent cement as a general-purpose coating on an articulated joint: Bandai’s published cement instructions describe seam bonding, not joint tightening.
The safest sequence is to diagnose the connection, confirm the assembly against the kit manual, decide whether the part must keep moving, and only then choose a reversible adjustment, permanent cement, or replacement request.

Identify the kind of failure before repairing it
“Loose” can describe three different problems. Treating them alike is how builders permanently glue an articulation, crack a peg, or make a replacement claim ineligible.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems| What you observe | Likely problem | First action | Appropriate route |
|---|---|---|---|
| A shoulder, hip, elbow, wrist, ankle, or ball joint moves but will not hold a pose | Insufficient friction or an incorrect fit in an articulated connection | Remove the load, inspect the joint and verify its orientation in the manual | Reversible fit or friction correction; keep the joint serviceable |
| An armor plate, hatch, or other part that should remain still falls off | Assembly orientation, interference, tolerance, or a connection intended to be fixed | Dry-fit it again exactly as shown in the instructions | Correct the fit; consider permanent hobby cement only when the connection is meant to stay fixed |
| A peg or part is cracked, snapped, missing, or visibly defective | Physical damage or a manufacturing problem | Stop forcing it and photograph the part and kit identification | Check the current replacement policy before attempting an irreversible repair |
Keep articulation, reversibility, material compatibility, and replacement eligibility in view. If any of those are unknown, postpone adhesive work. A joint that is merely loose is not the same as a defective part, and the distinction matters under Bandai Namco America’s replacement terms.

Inspect the joint without making the damage worse
Unload the connection
Take weapons, shields, effect parts, and heavy accessories off the model. Place the kit on a clean surface and support the surrounding limb so the joint is not carrying the model’s weight while you inspect it. Move the joint through its range slowly rather than repeatedly forcing it to the end of travel.
Check the manual and orientation
Compare the assembled connection with the kit’s instruction manual. A peg, polycap, hinge, or ball can look symmetrical while having a specific insertion direction. Confirm that every part is seated fully and that no armor edge, seam, flash, or incorrectly oriented insert is preventing the connection from closing. If the part becomes tight when correctly seated, the apparent looseness was an assembly problem rather than a need for adhesive.
Look for stress and cracks
Use bright, diffuse light and inspect the peg, socket, hinge barrel, and the plastic around them. A white stress mark, hairline crack, widening socket, or deformed peg is a warning to stop posing the model. Do not try to compensate for a cracked connection by adding more friction; additional force can turn a repairable part into a break.
Decide whether the connection must move
Ask one practical question: will this connection ever need to articulate, be disassembled for transport, or be replaced? If the answer is yes, preserve movement and reversibility. If the answer is no and the part is intended to be a permanent plastic assembly, a bonded seam may be appropriate. When the answer is uncertain, treat it as a moving or serviceable connection until the kit documentation proves otherwise.
Choose the repair path
| Path | Use it when | What it preserves | Main risk or limit |
|---|---|---|---|
| Reversible fit or friction correction | A joint moves but is too loose and must continue to articulate | Movement and future disassembly | The official sources available here do not validate one universal product or recipe; excessive added friction can stress the joint |
| Permanent plastic bonding | A stationary plastic connection is correctly fitted and is intended to remain fixed | A stable, non-moving assembly | It can prevent articulation or disassembly; solvent compatibility must be confirmed before use |
| Manufacturer or retailer replacement | The part is broken, missing, or defective, and the applicable policy covers the purchase | The original design and articulation | Eligibility is regional, time-limited, subject to availability, and does not cover every kind of looseness |
Bandai’s official Gunpla guidance documents cement for bonding plastic halves during seam removal. It does not establish cement as a friction coating for ball joints, pegs, or hinges. Therefore, do not brush solvent cement onto a moving joint simply because a joint feels loose.

How to deal with a loose articulated joint
There is no manufacturer-approved, one-size-fits-all tightening recipe in the cited guidance. Joint geometry, plastic type, polycaps, coatings, and the amount of wear differ by kit. The following workflow limits the chance of turning a loose connection into a seized or cracked one.
1. Establish the baseline
With accessories removed, pose the joint in several directions and note where it slips. Does it rotate freely, separate from the socket, or hold in one axis but not another? Record the original behavior before changing anything. This makes it possible to stop when the joint is strong enough rather than continuing until it binds.
2. Re-seat and test the unmodified parts
Disassemble only as far as the manual allows without force. Clean loose dust with a soft, dry brush or air bulb, then reassemble in the documented orientation. Test the connection under the weight it will actually carry. A joint that holds without the shield or backpack may need support or a lighter pose rather than a permanent chemical treatment.
3. Prefer a small, reversible change
If the fit is still loose, use only a friction aid that is explicitly intended for plastic models and can be removed without attacking the part. Apply the smallest possible amount to a non-visible contact area, allow it to cure according to that product’s instructions, and test again. Because no universal tightening material or quantity is established by the official sources cited here, treat any such adjustment as a controlled, kit-specific experiment: test on a hidden area first, make one change at a time, and never flood a socket.
4. Check the full range of motion
After the adjustment, move the joint slowly through its intended travel. It should hold a pose without grinding, whitening the plastic, or requiring noticeably more force than the surrounding joints. If movement becomes rough or the part starts to flex, remove the aid rather than forcing the joint. A connection that is technically tighter but cannot move safely is not a successful articulation repair.

5. Reassess the load
Large weapons, shields, wings, and backpacks can exceed what a small joint was designed to support. Test the model first without those accessories, then add them one at a time. A support stand, a different pose, or storing the model with heavy accessories removed can protect a sound joint without altering the plastic.

6. Stop when the joint is damaged
If the peg is split, the ball is chipped, or the socket has visibly opened, stop friction experiments. Photograph the damage and identify the kit and part. A broken connection calls for a replacement decision or a carefully planned structural repair, not progressively stronger coating.
How to secure a stationary plastic part with hobby cement
Use this method only for a connection that is correctly fitted and intended to stay fixed. Do not cement a shoulder, hip, knee, elbow, wrist, ankle, waist, or any other interface that must articulate or be disassembled.
What Bandai’s method is for
Bandai Namco Toys and Collectibles America’s “Tips To Improve Your Gunpla” describes hobby cement, including a limonene type, as a plastic-bonding aid for seam removal. The described process joins mating plastic edges, squeezes the halves together while the cement dries, and sands the resulting seam. That is a permanent bonding and finishing process, not a loose-joint tightening technique.
Prepare and dry-fit first
- Confirm in the manual that the two parts are supposed to be a fixed assembly.
- Dry-fit the parts without cement. Check orientation, alignment, clearance, and whether any hidden detail would be lost if the parts could no longer separate.
- Protect nearby clear parts, painted surfaces, polycaps, and moving mechanisms from contact with cement.
- Use only a cement whose label and instructions are suitable for the specific model-plastic parts. The available guidance does not establish an all-plastics compatibility rule, so test an inconspicuous area when the material is uncertain.
Apply, close, and hold
- Apply cement to the mating plastic edges as directed by the product manufacturer; do not coat the entire exterior or fill a moving socket.
- Bring the halves together in their correct orientation and hold them closed while the bond develops.
- Allow the assembly to dry for the time specified on the cement label before sanding, stressing, or attaching adjacent parts.
Sand the seam progressively
Bandai recommends starting with 400–600 grit sanding paper for seam cleanup, then moving to 1000 grit or finer for polishing. Use light, controlled strokes and check the surface often so you do not erase panel lines or round sharp edges. Sanding is a finishing step after the plastic has bonded; it is not a substitute for correcting a loose articulated fit.

Ventilate the work area
Work where fresh air can move through the room and follow the cement label’s safety instructions. Bandai’s page states: “Most importantly! Please do this in a well-ventilated area; open a window or a door.” Avoid breathing the chemical, keep containers closed when not in use, and keep cement away from children, food, and unprotected eyes or skin.
What to do when a part is broken, missing, or defective
Do not glue a visibly defective component before checking support. A replacement can preserve the kit’s original articulation and may be preferable to rebuilding a cracked peg.
Document the problem
- Take clear photographs showing the defect and the surrounding assembly.
- Record the exact kit name, grade or release information, and the part location or identifier from the manual.
- Keep the complete purchase receipt and packaging information.
- Do not discard the warning sticker or UPC if the support policy asks for them.
Check the U.S. and Canada policy
Bandai Namco America’s “Defective Replacements” page says its service is for purchases made by customers living in the United States and Canada and is subject to manufacturer availability. The policy states that broken, lost, or defective model-kit components may qualify for up to six parts per kit purchase. It also expressly excludes “Minor looseness,” so a joint that simply feels loose is not automatically eligible.
| Policy detail | What the page states |
|---|---|
| Geographic scope | Customers living in the United States and Canada |
| Potentially covered condition | Broken, lost, or defective model-kit components |
| Quantity limit | Up to six parts per kit purchase |
| Explicit exclusion | Minor looseness |
| Request timing | Within 90 days of receipt or delivery, or with an eligible Bandai Namco event purchase receipt as described by the policy |
| Requested evidence | Images of the defective part, the full receipt, the warning sticker, and the UPC |
| Availability | Replacement depends on manufacturer stock and the policy’s other conditions |
Terms and stock can change, and the U.S./Canada policy should not be assumed to apply elsewhere. Read the live page before submitting a request. If you bought the kit through a retailer, also check the retailer’s current damaged-item and missing-part procedure; keep the retailer receipt even if you contact the manufacturer.

Troubleshooting by symptom
The joint separates whenever the limb is posed
Remove the accessory load, confirm the peg is fully seated, and inspect for a crack or widened socket. If the plastic is intact, make only a small reversible fit adjustment and retest the complete range of motion. Do not use solvent cement on the interface. If the peg or socket is damaged, move to the replacement or structural-repair decision instead of adding more friction.

An armor panel falls off but has no moving function
Return to the manual and verify orientation, insertion depth, and whether another part is blocking the tab. Dry-fit until the panel sits flush. Only after the fit is correct should you consider a permanent bond, and only if you are certain the panel will never need removal for painting, maintenance, or transformation.
The part is tight after cementing and no longer moves
Do not force it. Solvent cement can create a permanent bond where articulation was required. Allow the area to dry fully, then assess whether the affected parts can be separated without damage. If they cannot, document the mistake and avoid applying additional solvent or leverage that could crack the surrounding plastic.
The peg shows a white line or begins to split
Stop posing the joint and remove heavy accessories. A stress mark means the connection is being overloaded or deformed. Photograph it, identify the part, and check replacement options before attempting a friction treatment.
The model keeps loosening after a successful adjustment
Look for the cause rather than repeatedly adding material: an oversized accessory, a socket that is spreading, a peg that is wearing, or a joint being moved beyond its designed range. Use lighter poses or a display support where appropriate. Repeated cycles of tightening and forcing can accelerate wear.
Prevent loose connections during assembly and display
- Dry-fit every joint and armor connection before applying any adhesive.
- Keep moving interfaces free of cement, paint buildup, and debris.
- Do not force parts past the stop points shown by the kit’s geometry.
- Pose heavy accessories close to the body or support them rather than loading a small wrist, shoulder, or hip indefinitely.
- When transporting the model, remove large accessories and support limbs so the joints are not carrying shock loads.
- Keep the instruction manual and packaging details; they make part identification and support requests much easier.
- Inspect joints periodically, especially after changing poses, and stop at the first sign of whitening, cracking, or widening.
Information to collect for kit-specific help
Loose-joint behavior depends on the exact kit and connection. A useful troubleshooting request should include:
- The complete kit name, grade, and release or purchase region.
- The joint location and type: ball, peg, hinge, polycap, waist, armor tab, or another connection.
- Whether the part must articulate, transform, or remain removable.
- What happens under load: rotation, separation, sagging, or binding.
- Clear photographs of the assembled joint and the individual parts.
- Any visible crack, stress whitening, deformation, cement, paint, or previous modification.
- The purchase date and receipt status if a defective-part request may be appropriate.
Those details allow a repair decision to be based on the actual connection instead of applying a generic “tighten every joint” recipe that may damage the model.
