Phantom sense in VR is a reported feeling of touch linked to virtual contact even when no matching physical touch occurs. People describe it in different ways, and studies document the experience without establishing how common it is, why it happens for some people, or how to reliably develop it.
What is phantom sense in VR?
“Phantom sense” is a broad term used in social VR discussions for a tactile sensation associated with virtual contact. Research also uses terms such as phantom tactile sensation (PTS) and phantom touch. The labels cover more than one kind of report, so they should not be treated as a single, precisely defined experience.

One controlled immersive-VR experiment studied a more specific effect called a “phantom touch illusion.” Participants touched their virtual bodies using a virtual object and reported tingling at the corresponding body location, despite receiving no physical stimulation there. The study also examined reports when participants touched body parts they could not see.

Can you feel touch in VR?
Some people report feeling touch or tingling in connection with virtual interactions. In a 2024 qualitative study, Qijia Chen, Michiel M. Spapé, and Giulio Jacucci analyzed 2,885 posts from 1,408 users in social VR discussions. They found accounts in which the sensation began naturally, accounts from people who deliberately tried to develop it, and reports associated with substance use. These are descriptions in an online discussion corpus, not a representative measure of VR users.

The study authors note that the sensation can be positive for some people, such as when it adds to immersion or social interaction, and uncomfortable or painful for others. Those are qualitative reports; the study does not establish how often each kind of experience occurs.
Is phantom sense real?
It is real in the sense that people have reported a subjective sensation. That does not mean an avatar physically touched them, or that every person in VR will feel virtual contact. The available studies document reported experiences and a specific experimental illusion, but they do not establish a population-wide prevalence rate.

Chen and colleagues’ 2024 paper cites an earlier questionnaire in which 41% of 40 participants reportedly experienced phantom touch. That figure is reported secondhand in their background section, comes from a small sample, and should not be read as the percentage of VR users who experience it.
Why might phantom touch happen?
The mechanism is unsettled. In the controlled experiment, Pilacinski and colleagues proposed that tactile gating and multisensory, top-down input involving the body schema may help explain the tingling participants reported. They wrote: “The reported PTI when touching invisible body parts indicates that tactile gating is not exclusively based on vision, but rather on multi-sensory, top-down input involving body schema.” This is the authors’ interpretation of results from that experiment, not a proven explanation for all phantom touch reports.

The social VR analysis discusses how mental imagery and multisensory cues might relate to users’ efforts to develop the sensation, but it also emphasizes that the phenomenon is under-researched. Why some people experience it and others do not remains uncertain.
Can you develop phantom touch?
Some social VR users described intentionally trying to develop phantom touch, but those accounts do not amount to a tested or reliable training method. The available evidence does not establish a guaranteed technique, a predictable timeline, or who is likely to experience it. Reports linked to substance use are not a reason to use alcohol or drugs; they do not show that substances are a safe or effective way to produce the sensation.

How is phantom sense different from VR haptics?

A headset provides access to VR, but it does not guarantee phantom touch. Haptic wearables are a separate category: they provide physical feedback rather than proving or causing the same experience described as phantom sense.
What should social VR users know about consent?
Chen and colleagues’ qualitative analysis includes reports of unwanted virtual touching and harassment, including accounts of other users touching someone after learning that person could feel it. The study does not quantify the risk, but the reports make consent and boundaries important in social VR. A phantom sensation does not make virtual contact physically equivalent to real-world touch, yet unwanted interactions can still be distressing. Users and communities can set clear boundaries, use available blocking or personal-space controls, and respect another person’s refusal.
