First work out whether the laptop itself is frozen, the display has gone blank, or only an app has stopped responding. The right next step depends on that distinction and on whether the laptop runs Windows, macOS, or ChromeOS. Start with reversible checks; a forced shutdown can lose unsaved work, and Chromebook recovery can erase local files.
Check what is actually frozen
Look for signs that the laptop is still responding before you force it off. Is the screen lit but unchanged, completely black, or showing a cursor? Does the keyboard’s Caps Lock indicator change when pressed? Is the laptop charging, and do you hear normal startup or notification sounds? These clues help distinguish a display problem from a system-wide freeze, but they do not identify a cause on their own.

- One app is stuck: The rest of the desktop or system still responds. Try closing only that app.
- The display is blank or not updating: The laptop may still be running, but the display output or graphics driver may have stalled.
- The whole laptop is unresponsive: Keyboard shortcuts and other normal controls do nothing. Try the least disruptive platform-specific options before forcing a shutdown.
- The laptop may be asleep or out of power: Connect its charger, check the outlet and charging indicator, and try waking it before treating the issue as a freeze.
If you know the operating system, use the matching steps below. If the lock screen is visible but its keyboard or touchpad does not work, a connected external keyboard or mouse can help distinguish an input-device problem from a system freeze, if one is available.
Try these Windows 10 or 11 steps
Microsoft’s guidance covers blank screens during startup, after sign-in, and following an update. A blank screen with a cursor can be associated with a stalled Windows process or driver; a blank screen at sign-in may involve display-output configuration or a user profile; and a blinking cursor can indicate that UEFI/BIOS cannot find a boot device. These are possible associations, not a diagnosis of your laptop.

1. Check power and display connections
- Connect the laptop to power and allow it a moment to respond.
- If you use an external monitor, check that it is powered on and that its cable is firmly connected.
- If the laptop display is the problem, disconnect external displays and peripherals, then check whether the built-in screen returns.
2. Reset the graphics driver or display mode
- Press Windows+Ctrl+Shift+B to reset the graphics driver. A beep or screen flicker may indicate that Windows responded.
- If the display remains blank, press Windows+P, then press P again and Enter to cycle display modes.
3. Use the security screen if it still responds
Press Ctrl+Alt+Del. If the security screen appears, open Task Manager. Where Windows Explorer is listed and stopped or unresponsive, select it and choose Restart. If the screen does not appear, continue to a restart only if the laptop remains unresponsive.
4. Force a restart only if needed
Microsoft’s blank-screen guidance says to hold the power button for 20 seconds to restart a laptop with a blank screen. This is a forced shutdown, so unsaved work may be lost. Do not start repeated shutdown-and-startup cycles to enter Recovery Mode as a first response to an ordinary lock-screen freeze; recovery is a separate troubleshooting path.

If only one app is stuck
- Press Option-Command-Esc to open the Force Quit window.
- Select the unresponsive app and choose Force Quit.
Unsaved changes in that app may be lost. If macOS still responds but force quit does not resolve the problem, restart from the Apple menu if it is accessible. See Apple’s instructions for force-quitting an app.

If the entire Mac is unresponsive
Press and hold the power button until the Mac shuts off, then press the button again to start it. On a Mac laptop with Touch ID, press and hold the Touch ID button as the power control. A forced shutdown can lose unsaved document changes. Apple’s Mac startup guidance covers further options if the restart leads to a blank startup screen or repeated startup failure; those steps vary between Apple silicon and Intel Macs.
Try a Chromebook hardware reset only after simpler steps
Google recommends a hardware reset only after other ways to fix the problem have failed. For most Chromebooks:

- Turn the Chromebook off.
- Press and hold Refresh, then tap Power.
- Release Refresh when the Chromebook starts.
This restarts hardware such as the keyboard and touchpad. Google warns that some files in Downloads might be deleted. Tablets and some Chromebook models use different sequences, so check the model-specific hardware-reset instructions rather than guessing.

A hardware reset is not the same as reinstalling or recovering ChromeOS. Google describes OS recovery for situations such as “ChromeOS is missing or damaged” or when earlier troubleshooting has failed. Recovery permanently erases local files on the Chromebook, so back up what you can first. Newer models may support recovery over the internet; other models may require a USB drive. Follow Google’s Chromebook recovery instructions for the device and situation.

If this is a school- or work-managed Chromebook, contact its administrator before attempting recovery. For technical hang diagnosis, Chromium also publishes specialized system-hang guidance; its diagnostic key sequences are not a substitute for the simpler user-facing reset steps above.
If the lock screen freezes again
Note the laptop make and model, operating-system version, exact message or screen appearance, whether Caps Lock or other status lights respond, whether the laptop is charging, and what changed shortly before the problem began. Also record which steps helped. On a Windows laptop that responds normally, disconnect recently added peripherals and test them one at a time, following the manufacturer’s instructions.
Stop before destructive recovery or reset steps if important local files are not backed up. Seek manufacturer support or a qualified repair service if power controls do not work, the problem keeps returning, the laptop shows signs of hardware trouble, or the model’s instructions call for service.
