Overwatch boosting is an attempt to raise a player’s Competitive standing through someone else’s higher-skill play or arranged matches, rather than through the account owner’s own performance. Paid account boosting is specifically listed as a prohibited service in Blizzard’s End User License Agreement. It is different from practicing with a coach or using Blizzard’s Wide Groups feature to queue with friends at different ranks.
How Overwatch boosting works
In a typical account-boosting arrangement, a higher-skilled player logs into the customer’s account and plays Competitive matches to increase its rank. Another form of rank manipulation involves arranged group play, where a much stronger player helps carry a lower-ranked player’s results. These are general descriptions of how boosting can work, not endorsements or guarantees about any particular service.

Overwatch matchmaking uses an internal matchmaking rating, or MMR, to estimate skill and assemble matches. Blizzard says it aims to match players with similar ratings and may widen the rating range if a match cannot be filled promptly. The visible rank and internal matchmaking inputs are related, but they are not interchangeable. So a higher displayed rank earned through another person’s play does not establish that the account owner has the skill represented by that rank; that is an inference from Blizzard’s description, not a published guarantee about what will happen to a specific account. Blizzard’s matchmaking explanation describes the system.
Is Overwatch boosting allowed?
Blizzard’s EULA names “performing in-game services including, without limitation, account boosting or power-leveling, in exchange for payment” as prohibited without authorization. The same agreement describes cheating as including unauthorized methods that influence gameplay and give an advantage over other players. Do not treat a paid third-party boosting service as approved or safe under those terms. Read Blizzard’s End User License Agreement.

Blizzard has also said that players who knowingly and regularly group with people flagged for cheating may face account action, including when the group benefits from an unfair advantage such as boosting. That warning is specifically about knowingly and regularly grouping with flagged players; it does not say that every match with an unfamiliar player creates the same risk. Blizzard has not quantified detection rates or stated a guaranteed outcome for an individual account in the cited material. The Defense Matrix update explains the enforcement scope.
Boosting versus legitimate ways to improve
| Option | Who plays | Purpose and policy context |
|---|---|---|
| Paid account boosting | Another player accesses the customer’s account and plays ranked matches. | Raises standing through someone else’s play; Blizzard’s EULA prohibits paid account-boosting services without authorization. |
| Arranged carry or rank manipulation | A much stronger player plays alongside a lower-ranked player in matches arranged to raise the latter’s results. | Manipulates rank rather than reflecting ordinary practice; Blizzard’s Wide Groups progression protections are designed to limit direct gains from large skill gaps. |
| Coaching | The learner keeps control of their own account and plays. | Teaches skills rather than having someone else earn results. Check any specific service against current Blizzard rules before assuming it is permitted. |
| Wide Groups | Friends play together in Blizzard’s Competitive queue. | An official option for friends far apart in rank, with queue and rank-progression tradeoffs. |
Blizzard says its rank-progression modifiers are intended to prevent lower-skilled players from being directly boosted by playing with higher-skilled friends. Depending on the skill gap, the lower-skilled player may receive little or no rank progression. Wide Groups can also mean longer queues and matches where opponents’ skills differ noticeably. Its thresholds and live rules can change, so check the current in-game Competitive information rather than relying on old instructions. Blizzard’s Wide Groups announcement describes the feature and its safeguards.

What Blizzard says about alternate accounts
Blizzard says it has worked to detect experienced players starting new accounts and move those accounts’ MMR more quickly toward the level where they belong. It calls smurfing—experienced players using new accounts—harmful to the new-player experience. This describes Blizzard’s goals and actions; it is not a promise that every alternate account or boosting arrangement will be detected. Blizzard’s update discusses the issue.
