The light helps the writing process; the information is stored magnetically, not as an optical pattern like data on a CD or DVD.
How does optically assisted recording work?
A laser or other light source produces a localized hot spot on the medium. While that area is hot, its coercivity—the resistance to changing its magnetic state—falls. A write head can then use a magnetic field to set the bit more readily. As the area cools, its coercivity rises again, helping the recorded magnetic state remain stable.

- Focus light on a tiny region of the recording medium.
- Heat that region so it is easier to change magnetically.
- Apply the magnetic write field while the region is hot.
- Allow the region to cool, leaving the information stored as a magnetic state.
The IEEE Magnetics Society describes the process as producing a hot spot, commonly with a laser, while data is written magnetically. The approach is relevant to high-density magnetic storage because it can make media with high coercivity writable despite the limited fields available from recording heads. The sources cited here do not establish particular temperatures, heating durations, or spot dimensions.
Does “optically assisted” mean the data is recorded optically?
No. In this usage, light supplies localized heat, while magnetism stores the bit. The distinction matters because “optical recording” can also mean storing information through optical changes in a medium. The USPTO Cooperative Patent Classification scheme lists recording by optical means separately from combined magnetic-and-optical recording, reflecting that these are not interchangeable descriptions.

How does it relate to HAMR and OAMR?
Heat-assisted magnetic recording
Heat-assisted magnetic recording (HAMR) describes the broader idea of using heat to assist magnetic writing. When light is the means of heating, the process is optically assisted. A patent on optically assisted magnetic recording describes optical absorption as a heating method and discusses near-field light to concentrate energy.
Optically assisted magnetic recording
Optically assisted magnetic recording (OAMR) makes the magnetic nature of the recording explicit: light assists, but does not necessarily encode, the data. Technical usage overlaps with HAMR, but the exact meaning depends on the system being described.

Magneto-optical and optical-disc recording
Do not assume that optically assisted magnetic recording is the same as magneto-optical recording or ordinary optical-disc writing. Those neighboring terms refer to different ways light and a medium may be involved. The sources cited here establish the high-level distinction between magnetic storage assisted by light and recording by optical means; they do not provide a complete taxonomy of every related technology.
Are there different OAMR approaches?
A 2005 paper abstract by Keiji Shono and coauthors classifies OAMR into magnetic-dominant and optical-dominant recording. The abstract does not give enough detail to reliably compare their architectures, operation, or trade-offs, so those labels alone should not be taken as a complete technical description.

Is optically assisted recording used in products today?
The technical sources cited here explain the mechanism and terminology, but do not establish which current commercial drives use optically assisted recording, whether a product using it is currently sold, or where it may be available. A current adoption claim would need confirmation from up-to-date manufacturer or product documentation.
