Image-to-image AI gives you another way to steer a result: provide a reference image for visual guidance, then use text to describe the content or changes you want. Depending on the tool and reference mode, the image can influence composition, color, style, content, or spatial structure. It is influence—not a guarantee of an exact copy or pixel-level preservation.
What image-to-image AI does
Image-to-image generation starts with an existing visual input and produces a new image guided by that image and, often, a text prompt. The image can communicate visual information that may be hard to specify precisely in words, while the prompt can describe the subject, meaning, or appearance you want.

In the Plug-and-Play Diffusion paper, the guidance image provides layout while text guides semantics and appearance. The authors demonstrate translating sketches and drawings, changing an object’s appearance, and modifying lighting or color. This is one approach to image-conditioned generation, not a universal description of every product’s implementation. Read the paper.

Which parts of an image can a reference guide?
The answer depends on the tool and the kind of reference you choose. Some controls emphasize an image’s overall look; others focus on its structure or use spatial cues to guide placement and shape.

- Style: A reference can inform qualities such as the visual look and feel. Adobe describes its style reference as guidance for generated variations and for developing consistent-looking assets. Adobe’s style-reference documentation explains this mode.
- Structure: Adobe’s structure reference guides characteristics such as outline and depth. It is intended to influence how closely a generated variation follows the reference’s structural features, rather than simply borrowing its aesthetic. Adobe’s structure-reference documentation describes the control.
- Spatial layout: ControlNet research explores inputs including edges, depth maps, segmentation maps, human pose, and scribbles. These can make complex layouts, poses, shapes, and forms more explicit than a prose description alone. The paper describes conditioning text-to-image models with such spatial inputs; it does not establish that every consumer tool offers each control. Read the ControlNet paper.
How references differ across tools
“Image weight,” “style weight,” and “reference strength” are product-specific controls. Their numbers do not share a common scale, and controls with similar names need not do the same job. The documented examples below illustrate the differences; values are those in documentation accessed in 2026 and may change.

How to use a reference without expecting an exact copy
- Decide what you want the image to contribute. Choose a reference for its style, composition, structure, or other visual quality. If the goal is a particular pose or layout, a spatial control such as pose or edges may be more direct where available.
- Describe the desired result in text. Name the subject and the changes or qualities you want. For Midjourney style references, its documentation recommends simple prompts focused on the desired content rather than instructions about how to modify the reference.
- Adjust the relevant control within that tool. Change image weight for an image prompt or style weight for a style reference in Midjourney; use the corresponding reference strength in Adobe. Do not transfer a number from one product’s scale to another.
- Generate variations and assess the specific mismatch. If the style is right but layout is not, try a structural or spatial reference if the tool offers one. If the content is wrong, clarify the text prompt. Change one relevant input at a time where practical so you can see what influenced the result.
- Use an editor when the task requires precise local changes. Midjourney distinguishes references that guide new creations from precise changes to an existing image, for which it points users to its Editor.
What “more control” does—and does not—mean
A reference adds a visual steering channel: it can help convey qualities that are cumbersome to describe in prose. But the result remains generated, and guidance is not a promise of faithful preservation, exact copying, or repeatable pixel-level output. Midjourney explicitly says image prompts and references guide new creations rather than copy them exactly. Its Image Prompts documentation makes that limitation clear.

ControlNet’s authors likewise frame spatial conditioning as a response to the difficulty of describing complex layouts, poses, shapes, and forms with text alone. It makes those aspects easier to specify; it does not imply that every output will obey them perfectly. For a reader asking whether Midjourney has an equivalent to another tool’s “denoise strength,” the useful answer is that the parameter names and behavior are not interchangeable: identify whether you need content influence, style influence, or structural guidance, then use the corresponding control documented for the specific model and version.
