What Is OpenWrt, and How Does It Turn a Linux Device Into a Router?

OpenWrt is an extensible Linux distribution for compatible embedded devices. Here’s how it configures network interfaces, routes traffic, and what to verify before installation.

OpenWrt is a GNU/Linux distribution for embedded devices, especially wireless routers. It replaces or supplements a device’s vendor firmware with a writable, customizable operating system. OpenWrt configures the device’s network interfaces and services; Linux then routes and filters packets between networks. What a particular device can do depends on its hardware, drivers, installed packages, and configuration.

What OpenWrt is—and what it is not

The OpenWrt Project describes OpenWrt as “a highly extensible GNU/Linux distribution for embedded devices (typically wireless routers).” In practical terms, it is an operating system built to run on compatible network hardware, rather than a router model or a single preconfigured feature set. Unlike firmware that offers only the options chosen by a device manufacturer, OpenWrt provides a writable system and a package manager. Users can adjust the system and, where the device has adequate resources and support, install additional software. A package does not make unsupported hardware work by itself: usable network interfaces and drivers, available memory and storage, and correct configuration all remain important.

How OpenWrt makes a device route traffic

A router moves packets between networks. A common home setup connects an internal local area network (LAN) to an upstream wide area network (WAN), but a device can be configured for other network layouts too. OpenWrt brings together interface configuration and services with Linux’s packet-forwarding and filtering facilities.

Interfaces and network roles

Physical ports and wireless radios provide ways for devices to connect. OpenWrt configures these interfaces and assigns them network roles. Depending on the topology, the device may provide Ethernet switching, wireless access, DHCP service for address assignment, and routing between networks. These are separate functions that can be combined in different ways; merely installing OpenWrt does not automatically choose the right arrangement for a particular network. Packet routing and firewall policy

Linux handles packet forwarding, while firewall rules determine which traffic may enter, leave, or pass through the device. In the current firewall overview, OpenWrt documents firewall4 (fw4): it reads the firewall configuration in user space and generates nftables rules that Linux kernel netfilter modules enforce. That is the link between editable OpenWrt firewall settings and packet filtering in the kernel. OpenWrt: Firewall overview

Routing and firewalling are related but not identical: routing determines where packets can go, while firewall policy controls which packets are allowed. The result depends on the rules and network configuration you set, not on OpenWrt acting as an automatic security guarantee.

Will OpenWrt run on your router?

Not every router is supported, and two hardware revisions sold under a similar product name may differ. Check the current pre-installation FAQ and Table of Hardware and factory-install guidance for the exact model and revision. The device’s entry is the place to confirm support, read device-specific caveats, and follow the installation method.

When considering a new router, OpenWrt’s factory-install guidance recommends at least 16 MB of flash and 128 MB of RAM. This is a general project recommendation, not a guarantee that a device is supported or that it will perform well for every workload. Check the device listing and compare its ports, wireless capability, resources, and supported installation method with the role you need it to fill. OpenWrt: First Time Installation

The OpenWrt Project identifies the OpenWrt One as a router launched on November 29, 2024. Its project page lists a MediaTek MT7981B SoC, dual-band Wi-Fi 6 (3×3/2×2), PoE, dual Ethernet ports, and a mikroBUS expansion header. Those specifications identify the project’s hardware; they do not establish current retailer availability. OpenWrt Project welcome page

What to check before installing OpenWrt

  1. Identify the exact hardware. Record the full model name and hardware revision from the device label or its existing administration interface. Do not assume that a similarly named revision uses the same firmware.
  2. Read the device-specific installation page. Confirm that the exact unit is supported and follow its instructions. OpenWrt distinguishes factory images, generally used from a vendor firmware interface or flashing utility, from sysupgrade images intended for devices already running OpenWrt. Use only the image and procedure specified for your device. OpenWrt: FAQ before installing
  3. Plan for the interruption. Installing OpenWrt on the router that provides your internet connection can interrupt access for a few minutes. Keep the instructions available offline or on another device and allow time to complete the process. OpenWrt: Quick start guide

When OpenWrt makes sense

OpenWrt is worth considering when you want a writable Linux-based system, configuration beyond what the vendor firmware exposes, or the option to add supported packages. It is a poor fit if the precise hardware is unsupported, if you cannot tolerate installation downtime, or if you expect a software change to overcome device limits such as missing drivers or inadequate resources. Start with the exact hardware listing, then decide whether its documented capabilities match your intended network role.
