Check the app’s Android requirement against the Passport’s BlackBerry 10 runtime, then test installation, launch, sign-in, network access, and the feature you need. BlackBerry documents that BlackBerry 10.3 can run apps written for Android 4.3 (Jelly Bean MR2, API level 18) and earlier—but also warns that some Google Play Services and specific APIs are unsupported. Passing the version check is only a first screen, not a guarantee that an app works.
What Android apps can a BlackBerry Passport run?
The Passport runs BlackBerry 10, not a current Android release. BlackBerry’s developer documentation says BlackBerry 10 version 10.3 can run apps written for Android 4.3 (Jelly Bean MR2, API level 18) and earlier. It also cautions that some Google Play Services and specific APIs are unsupported. Read the BlackBerry 10 Android compatibility documentation.

That limit is not a compatibility list: it does not certify every app written for Android 4.3 or older. An app may install but fail to start, sign in, connect to its service, or use a particular feature. BlackBerry’s Passport user guide likewise warns that some apps depend on services BlackBerry 10 does not support. See the BlackBerry Passport Smartphone User Guide.

How to check a particular app
- Check the Passport’s software version. Open Settings and look for About or Software Information. Labels may vary by installed release; the available documentation does not establish one universal menu path. Note whether the phone is running BlackBerry 10.3 before applying the documented Android 4.3/API 18 ceiling.
- Find requirements for the exact app build. Check its minimum Android version or API level, required services and APIs, and whether the publisher still operates the app’s online service. Requirements and server behavior can change; no current requirements are established here for any particular third-party app.
- Compare those requirements with BlackBerry 10. A stated requirement newer than Android 4.3/API 18 is a strong incompatibility signal for the documented 10.3 runtime. A need for Google Play Services or another unsupported API is also a warning, even if the stated minimum Android version is low enough. BlackBerry’s documentation describes these runtime limits.
- If a compatible build looks plausible, test each stage separately. Check whether it installs, opens, lets you sign in, connects to its service, and performs the specific feature you need. Success at one stage does not prove the next will work. This is a practical check based on the documented limitations, not a certification or device test of named apps.
- Use failures as clues, not a diagnosis. A failure could involve the Android version requirement, an unsupported service or API, a changed or unavailable app backend, or the legacy platform environment. The available sources establish platform and lifecycle limitations but cannot identify the cause for a particular app without testing it.
Why might an app install but not work?
Installation only shows that the package could be placed on the phone; it does not establish that its runtime dependencies, sign-in flow, network connection, or essential features work. The Passport guide specifically cautions that some apps rely on unsupported services. Check the stage where it fails and, if possible, compare the app’s stated requirements with the phone’s software version.

Platform age is also relevant. BlackBerry lists BlackBerry 10.3.x end of sales and development as August 2018 and end of life as December 2019. It defines end of life as the point after which the software receives no new versions, patches, security fixes, or workarounds. BlackBerry’s operating-system lifecycle page provides the dates and definition.
BlackBerry’s end-of-life FAQ, updated December 22, 2021, says legacy BlackBerry 10 services would no longer be available after January 4, 2022, and warns that affected devices might not reliably function over carrier or Wi-Fi connections. That notice is context for possible service or connection problems; it does not establish that every third-party app or network function stopped working. Read BlackBerry’s end-of-life FAQ.

Can you still get Android apps from the Amazon Appstore?
Do not treat an old Amazon Appstore listing or download as a guarantee of current support. Amazon announced that Appstore support for Android devices ended August 20, 2025, and said apps obtained there would not be guaranteed to run on Android devices after that date. Amazon identified Fire tablets and Fire TV as outside that change. The announcement does not establish the status of every previously installed app on a Passport. Read Amazon’s announcement about the Appstore change.
The Passport user guide describes transferring Android app files by USB and finding APK files in File Manager. A data-capable cable may help move a file, but transferring an APK does not update the phone’s Android runtime or make an incompatible app work. Consult the Passport user guide.
