OpenLiteSpeed + Node.js is a web-server-and-application arrangement: OpenLiteSpeed receives requests for a site and routes selected traffic to a Node.js application running separately. OpenLiteSpeed handles the public-facing web-server role; Node.js runs the application logic and returns responses through the configured connection.
What each part does
OpenLiteSpeed is the web server in front of the application. Node.js is the runtime for the application, which can run as a separate server or application process. OpenLiteSpeed directs requests to that backend rather than making the two products interchangeable.

This separation gives you a place to configure how incoming requests reach the application. The exact routing depends on the OpenLiteSpeed configuration you choose; the documented examples use different models and should not be treated as universal defaults.
How OpenLiteSpeed routes requests to Node.js
OpenLiteSpeed documents two relevant configuration approaches. One is a Node.js application-server context associated with a site path. The other defines an external application as a backend, then routes selected requests to it.
#1 Best Overall
| Approach | How it is configured | Documented example |
|---|---|---|
| Node.js application-server context | Define a context in the virtual host, including its URI, application location, Node.js binary path, and application type. | The guide uses the URI /node/, a Node.js binary path such as /usr/bin/node, and application type node. These are guide examples, not required values. OpenLiteSpeed Node.js application-server guide. |
| Reverse proxy to an external application | Define the backend as an external application with its address and port, then choose how requests are routed to it. | The guide illustrates a backend at localhost:8080. It lists rewrite rules, proxy contexts, and script handlers as routing options; the example address is not a Node.js requirement. OpenLiteSpeed reverse-proxy guide. |
The documentation does not establish that one approach is faster, more secure, or preferable for every app. Choose based on how your application runs and which site paths should reach it, then adapt the configuration to your actual installation.
What the Node.js walkthrough demonstrates
OpenLiteSpeed’s Node.js guide demonstrates a minimal HTTP application and a context that routes a site path to it. In the sample, the application uses Node’s built-in HTTP module, listens on 127.0.0.1 at port 3000, and returns plain text. The guide’s verification step is to visit the OpenLiteSpeed host at /node/.

Those values describe the walkthrough, not defaults for all deployments. Your context URI, application location, Node.js executable, and listening address and port must match your own setup. The backend has to be reachable at the address OpenLiteSpeed is configured to use.

How to think through a basic setup
- Run the Node.js application. Identify how it starts and the address and port on which it listens. The official walkthrough’s
127.0.0.1:3000is only an example. - Choose the routing model. Use the Node.js application-server context model when configuring the documented kind of context for a site path. Use the external-application model when defining a backend separately and routing requests to it.
- Match the OpenLiteSpeed configuration to the application. Set the context or backend address, port, and routing rules to the real application values rather than copying sample paths or ports blindly.
- Verify through the public-facing host. Request the configured site path and confirm that the expected application response comes back. If it does not, check that the app is running, that the backend address and port agree, and that the selected route matches the requested path.
The official configuration guides explain these routing patterns, but do not provide a complete production deployment checklist or prescribe a process manager. For deployment-specific details, consult the current OpenLiteSpeed release documentation and the documentation for your operating system and Node.js setup.
Can OpenLiteSpeed proxy WebSockets for a Node.js app?
OpenLiteSpeed documents a separate WebSocket proxy configuration. Its guide says the proxy forwards traffic carrying a WebSocket upgrade request to the configured backend. This is distinct from ordinary HTTP request routing, so an application that uses WebSockets needs the corresponding proxy configuration.
The same documentation states: “OpenLiteSpeed does not support WSS as a backend WebSocket, but the client can still use WSS over HTTPS to connect if you have SSL set up.” In other words, the documented limitation concerns WSS between OpenLiteSpeed and the backend; it does not rule out a client connecting over WSS to an HTTPS-enabled OpenLiteSpeed server. See the OpenLiteSpeed WebSocket Proxy guide for the configuration details.

Deployment options and what is not established
OpenLiteSpeed’s cloud-image documentation lists Node.js among the application options available through cloud images. That makes a cloud image one documented way to approach deployment; it does not establish that any particular provider is suitable or preferred. OpenLiteSpeed cloud-image documentation.
The cited guides do not provide a current OpenLiteSpeed/Node.js version compatibility matrix, measured performance results for this combination, or a universal production security recipe. Do not infer version compatibility or speed gains from the configuration examples alone. Check current release and operating-system documentation for the versions and deployment environment you plan to use.
OpenLiteSpeed also documents one-click script options related to proxy configuration. Because the options and behavior may change, consult the current One-Click Script documentation rather than relying on an unverified command copied from elsewhere.
