Omarchy is an Arch Linux-based desktop that arrives with a chosen workflow, applications, themes, and system configuration already in place. It uses the Hyprland tiling window manager and a Quickshell desktop, so it is not just a visual theme for an existing installation. The trade-off is straightforward: you get a coherent starting setup, but its defaults reflect the project creator’s preferences—and its keyboard-driven style may not suit everyone.
What Omarchy includes
Omarchy builds a desktop environment around Arch Linux, Hyprland, and Quickshell. Its official welcome manual lists applications including Neovim, Chromium, Obsidian, LibreOffice, Kdenlive, and OBS Studio. The project’s file-layout documentation describes two Arch packages: omarchy, which includes runtime binaries, installation and finalization scripts, migrations, themes, and the Quickshell desktop; and omarchy-settings, which contains system settings and configuration, fonts, themes, and related files. Together, these components make Omarchy a curated system setup rather than a wallpaper or theme pack.

Creator David Heinemeier Hansson describes the selection as “There’s zero bloat here: Just everything I use.” That is a statement of the project’s philosophy, not an independently measured comparison of how much software it includes. The manual also calls the environment “TUI-heavy” and says getting used to it “can be an acquired taste.” (Omarchy welcome manual; Omarchy file-layout documentation)

Choosing Omarchy means starting with a prepared Arch-based desktop instead of assembling an Arch environment and its desktop configuration yourself. That can be appealing if you want the project’s selected tools and settings ready to use. It also means starting with choices you did not make: the tiling, keyboard-oriented workflow, included applications, and visual defaults are part of the package.

Before choosing it, consider how much you want to adapt an existing setup versus build and maintain your own. If you prefer a conventional desktop workflow, or want to select every component from the outset, Omarchy’s defaults may be a poor fit. The available official materials do not establish comparative performance, a universal minimum specification, or compatibility across a complete range of hardware.
How installation works—and what can go wrong
The getting-started manual’s process begins with downloading the Omarchy ISO, writing it to a USB stick, and booting from that stick. It describes two installation paths, with materially different consequences for the selected drive:

The manual says installation defaults to full encryption. It also says Secure Boot and/or TPM must be turned off in BIOS to install Omarchy. Because that guidance can depend on the installer version and machine firmware, check the current installation instructions and your computer’s firmware settings before changing them. There is also a startup keyboard caveat: the manual says a Bluetooth keyboard cannot enter the full-disk-encryption password at startup and recommends using a wired or 2.4 GHz keyboard for that step. If you use Bluetooth peripherals, plan for a keyboard that can work during startup.

Is Omarchy the right kind of Arch-based desktop for you?
- Consider it if you want an Arch-based system with a desktop workflow, applications, and configuration selected for you rather than starting from a blank slate.
- Think carefully if you are unsure about tiling or a keyboard-driven, TUI-heavy environment; the project itself describes its style as something users may need to acquire a taste for.
- Look elsewhere or build your own if choosing each component and default is more important to you than receiving a preconfigured baseline.
For a comparison with another preconfigured Linux distribution or a manually configured Arch desktop, assess the actual installation path, window-management workflow, default applications, visual choices, and expected maintenance. The official materials cited here do not provide a product-by-product comparison or scored results, so those are questions to investigate rather than established advantages for Omarchy.
A Framework-published guide documents an Omarchy installation in the specific context of the Framework Desktop. It is an example for that hardware context, not evidence of support for every Framework model or for computers generally. (Framework: Omarchy Linux Installation on the Framework Desktop)
